The brake light's may be out as the fuse powers the solioid that unlocks the shifter after you put the break on. break lights not working because the switch is bad broken or the wire disconnected all happen.

Why is it hard to shift gears on my 1997 lumina.

if the shift process is through a cable then check the cable for wear and fraying, rust or dry. If it is through linkage check for worn /rusted /tight connections

2002 dodge neon manual has no gears.

the gears my be fine need to remove the boot around your shifter make sure everything is connected still should have a cable shifter in it. if it is all hooked up there open the hood and look on top of the transmission it will have a lever the move back n forth to shift for each gear the other end of your cable attaches to the lever should have a either a plastic bushing or clip attaching it to the lever some time those wear the it pops off

have somebody move the shift around and see if it moves if it dont you need a shifter cable.

if it does then before you go any further reach down with your hand or a screw drive or pry bar if you cant get you hands to it with the clutch engaged you should be able to shift it into gear maunaly and feel it go in jus like you would if you was doin it from in the car make sure your gently so you dont bend anything if you can feel it go into each gear make sure your adjust the cable to where everything works

My 2000 Intrepid became very hard to put in and out of gear and now cant move shift lever, is it the shift cable? transmition link will shift fine if cable is disconnected.

It is the shift cable. It is a dealer item, about 70 dollars. Plus there is a new bracket they will sell you to cure the problem.

Clucth not disengauging....

try this.you have 2 shifter cables.one is select cable the other is shift cable.first put the transmission selector lever in neutral.then move transmission shift lever to 4th gear.depress clutch to if necessary to shift.move the shift lever to the 4th gear position until contacts stop.then you turn the adjuster turn buckle so the shift cable eye aligns with the eye in the gear shift lever.when installing the cable eye. make sure the flange side of plastic bushing at the shift cable end is on the cotter pin side.the cables should be adjusted so the clearance between the shift lever and both stoppers are equal when the shift lever is moved to 3rd and 4th gear. move the shift lever to each position and check that the shifting is smooth.

Need instructions on how to connect the gear shifting cable back onto the transmission.

simple, you take the round end of the shifter cable and place it over the linkage bar on the transmition, apply presure and it should pop right on.
