Put a mechanical gauge on there asap and check actual readings (temporary for testing)
If it still does that, chances are that the pickup screen is partially obstructed. If so, either flush engine or remove the pan and replace the pump. (you could clean it up but since you are already there, better to replace.) If the mechanical gauge reads at least 5-8psi at idle hot, you could try using marvel oil to begin to break up sludge.

I just changed oil sender on a 1999 jeep and the new one did the the samething come to find out the new one was defected so check that first if not then you have intern problems like bad cambearings or crankshaft bearings or clogged oilpump pick-up screen or week oil pump

You need to have the oil pressure checked with a manual oil pressure gauge you may have a bad sending unit. If the you oil pressure is the same with the manual gauge then you have a oil pressure problem.

Replace the oil pressure sending unit its giveing a false reading . The problem is when the engine is cold the oil pressure is low and it takes a little time to build up whem cranking the engine and that sends a signal to the computer PCM /VCM what ever but your 40 to 60 lbs oil pressure is graet its ideal .The unit switches when the oil pressure is high enough to trip the switch inside the sending unit and that is sent to the vehicle control module

The oil presser gauge keeps going to 0 when i stop but when I give it gas it goes to about 40. what do you think the problem is

I think your sending unit which sends a signal to the gauge needs replaced. Oil could be sludgy and gumming up inside the unit. But basically you could drive it for awhile but I suggest you get it in for servicing unless you want to try to fix it yourself. One quart low of oil could also do this. How many miles do you have on it?

Oil gauge may be bad, you said you changed the oil sending unit, and tried a aftermarket which worked, so the other option is to have you oil gauge checked. The sending unit may be good but you gauge is not reading proper.

There may be a loose wire or the gauge or sending unit may be going bad. The first thing I would do is to hook up a temporary oil pressure gauge, not using the old one at all. With this watch gauge while driving and see what readings you get. If the readings still jump around you have a pump that is getting weak and failing, If that is the case the pump should be replaced, but with high milage you may consider rebuilding the entire engine. If the readings stay normal start checking for a loose wire at gauge or sender. Then check sender, then gauge and replace as needed.

Oil gauge flutuating

I think I'd be real tempted to check connection at oil sender, for clean and tight, and if that doesn't help, for the price, I'd change it, but not knowing exactly which engine you have, I couldn't give you a ballpark on oil sender switch. You can look it up or call autozone, or similar for price.

'oil pressure gauge

Replace the useless oil pressure sending unit with one from a early year such as 1986 .connect only the wire to the oil light.if you want a pressure gauge install an after market one..The stupid factory sending units can not rear pressure under 40lbs.at less than 40psi the light is on and the gauge reads 0 good luck carl
