Check your valves. This will cause your problem if they do not seat properly. Leakingvalves will foul out your pluggs real quick and cause missing. On your 1988 pathfinder.

Does a 1988 carborated Nissan pathfinder have a fuel pump regulator?

Are you sure it is a carburetor and not throttle body injection? They do look similar.
If it is a carburetor, there would not be a regulator. The fuel pump will either be a mechanical pump mounted on the engine, or a low volume electric pump in the gas line from gas tank to the engine.
If it is throttle body injection (TBI), yes, there is a fuel pressure regulator, probably located near the throttle body. It will have gas lines connected to it (one line will be a return line back to the gas tank) and a vacuum line. The fuel pressure on TBI systems is not as high as multi point injection, usually around 20 psi. You would have to check the specific pressure requirement for your pathfinder.

Take off the air cleaner cover and look at top of unit. A carburetor should have a choke plate right at top of the carb throat. However some Nissans by '88 had a carburetor without a choke-it used an enricher jet controlled by the ecu for added fuel when starting.. On a TBI, looking down at the unit where the air goes in, you will see one or two injectors with a wiring harness connected to them-each injector will have two wires connected to it.
If still unsure, check engine designation on the under hood label. Carbureted engines will have a s letter designation, injected engines will have letter i. To explain: my '87 Sentra is carbureted, so engine designation is E16s, some same engines were injected, so their designation is E16i.

Ok i have a 1996 nissan maxima 3.0 i have had this problem before replaced front three plugs and it was fine now it wont start at all i replaced all the plugs and then i noticed the plugs are being flooded...

I have experienced the same issue in my Pathfinder that has the same VG30E engine. I would recommend that you change your plugs to the NGK Vgrooove Copper plugs, or go with the iridium series. If you are running anything other than that, you are not going to receive the intended spark for the engine. I took someone's recommendation and used the Bosch platinum plug, and let me tell you that was a huge mistake, I lost power, performance, and the plugs fouled out causing the engine to miss.

most misses are injector related either from dirty injectors , low fuel pressure ow injector wiring faults
use a quality injector cleaner for a tank or two
run the fault codes to check for other related sensor problems

4.0 runs but misses and blows blak smoke

if your blowing black smoke your running way to rich (to much gas not enough air) fuel pressure regulator stuck injector bad plugs and wires
where i would start is check fuel pressure regulator that more than likely your cause but u need to change your spark plugs too because all that gas is fouled out your plugs check your spark plug wires with ohm meter if they read under 15 k ohms there good

Check or replace your injectors if it is a TBI, run some injector cleaner through your gas tank if you have a MFI or CSFI injection system.

It don't sound electrical to me sense you chg. all that, the plugs you put in are they a hotter plug? You don't by chance have a broken valve spring do ya, thats what it sounds like to me. Just sounds to me that its valve spring most likely exhaust valve.
