I would be checking the external regulator ( if it is not internal in the alternator ) as that will stop a charge for the battery

Voltage is regulated within a module (old school voltage regulator) usually internal failure in the module (PCM) provided all wiring is in working order, have it scanned for faults and alternator output to be sure

Changed out altenator on 05 Monte Carlo LS 3.4 motor 4x's an all of them when tested while car is running says voltage regulator not working properly.. Why?? What could do this


This could be a wiring / earth fault but I suspect that on all the units the regulator may not be the right one . There are 2 types of regulators ---internal (inside the alternator in the brush pack unit and external regulators that are fixed in the engine compartment either to the fore wall or inner guard.. Have the test done by an accredited auto electrician to find the fault.

460 engine? I dont think the white wire is used if it has an internal regulator, you mean WHITE/BLACK WIRE??? IF it has an EXTERNAL VOLATAGE REGULATOR it goes to that (white/black)

Jumper cabels were hooked up backwards. Battery changed, car put on machine no charge output shown. Altenator with internal regulator was taken out of car and tested, O.K.. Radio, air cond., horn, and...


YES. It helps if we know what year, eng size, auto or manual trans ect. There are several "fusible links" in the fuse box under the hood, check them all.

Where is the voltage regulator on a 1986 new yorker 2.2 turbo i,ve checked all over under the hood with no luck should,nt it be on the passengers side wall,thanks in advance,gary.


chrystler had a rash of vechiles that they used the ecm as the voltage regulator, if this is the case and your new altenator is not charging then you can install a diode pack obtainable at your local parts store. it could also have an internally regulated altenator.

This sounds like the altenator belt is loose. When the altenator is under a load the magnetic field causes the altenator to require more fource to rotate. At higher engine rpms the belt can be slipping on the altenator pulley. There is one other possibility I can think of and that would be that the voltage regulator is faulty and and causing an overvoltage at higher engine speeds and therfore opening up the field circuit to prevent the altenator from over charging the battery this is a safety function of the regulator. I would check the belt first.

Test vehicle voltage while driving


if your just trying to test your altenator output of your vehicle just place the two terminals of the multimeter to the battery and u should get a good general output voltage that shouldnt vary much from when you drive since the the altenator has a regulator in it

Battery runs down after driving vehicle


Sounds like you need an alternator. Start the car and hook a volt meter to the battery. If it is not charging over 13.8 volts it's alternator time. Thanks....Dan
