Question about 1997 GMC Safari

My husband was changing the rear brakes on the driverside and discovered a thick black oil covering everything, pads and all. what is going on here?

Hte rear axle seals are leaking, it will require removal of the rear end cover and the axles

I know a bit about cars but being English I don't understand about rear rotors. I am guessing it is what we call brake discs or disc brakes.
Unlikely I would have thought the actual rotors or discs would be worn to a thickness of 6mm (which would be bad news) and perhaps you are referring to the thickness of the friction material?

It is only a relatively small percentage of braking effort that is exerted by the rear brakes so the rate of wear is much lower than the front brakes so it isn't unusual to discover new friction material isn't much thicker than about 8mm, though many are thicker and some are as thick as those at the front.

It is a general rule that is adopted by most brake and car manufacturer that replacement of friction material or disc pads is not required until there is only 3mm left and I have seen manufacturer's recommendations saying 2mm.
With 6mm of friction material still remaining which is two or three times the recommended minimum there would be no grounds to refuse certification.

Take your car to the service shop and the guy in the greasy overalls will ask himself if 6mm will last you until your next visit and if he is honest he will replace only after asking you what sort of mileage you cover. If he is normal he will grab the extra profit with both hands...

Master cylinder and/or brake booster could be the problem. A tiny bit of air in the system will effect your braking abilty. A fault in the ABS system would prompt the computer to trigger the ABS light. If you have brake shoes on the rear, make sure they are properly adjusted. Hope this helps.

1998 F-150 rear driverside drum brake has oil in it. I think it is the axle oil seal on that side. How do I change it?


take off the wheel and check to see if the axle is bolted to the rear end or poss have to take off the diff cover to take the axle hold down clips off then pull out the axle pull out the seal reinstall new one

The colour of the oil will depend of the where the leak may be from.
If the oil seems tobe a light brown in colour it would sugest that a brake pipe or rubber hose has failed. The flexible rubber hose is a very common fault on this paticular vehicle as the brake flexi hose is secured on the shock absorber / front hub assembly. The brake fluid level should be checked and if found to be low it would indicate that this is the problem. If this is the case , in some rare circumstances the fluid can cover the brake pads. If this is the case then the front brake pads should be changed and all parts thouroughly cleaned with water as the brake fluid is hydroscopic which means it absorbs water and water alone will wash of the brake fluid and stop any further corrosion this may cause.

If the driveshaft gaiter has failed the colour of the oil would be a very dark green almost black, but you will only have a small amount of this within the system so it is very unlikely to be this.

If the oil is very dark brown, almost black then this will normally be the front crankshaft oil seal or camshaft seal. Both of these require removal of the cam belt assembly if you have the CVH engine ( if you have a large silver top cover on the engine ) or if you have a slim black cover this is a Valencia engined model which is very easy to work on in replacing the front crankshaft oil seal but does not have a camshaft seal like the CVH engine but it does have a rocker cover gasket like the CVH engine which are very prone to going hard through lack of maintanance as it is made from cork and does go hard with age and then leak oil.

You are correct, it's not brake fluid. Check the level in your rear axle, it sounds like you have bad seals in the axles allowing the rear differential gear oil to leak inside the brake drums.
This is a heavy weight oil, 80 or 90 weight. This leakage will ruin your brake pads, and if enough leaks out, your rear differential will blow. The seals aren't expensive, but it's a lot of labor to pull everything apart to get at the seals, plus new rear brakes. My Ford ( and I'm sure your GMC) require removal of the rear axles to change the seals. Good Luck! countrycurt0
