Question about 1999 Nissan Maxima

1 Answer

The car won't start after changing the ignition switch. Upon further examination the wiring after the switch appears to have been previously tampered with. I would describe the tampering as adding an inline five wire relay under the dash spliced into the red/black wire of the ignition switch as follows: Follow from the switch, to a jack, a red/black wire after the jack is manually connected to the relay by both a solid blue and a solid black wire. from the relay is a red wire from its center wired back to the red/black wire which goes under the dash. the relay also has an orange wire not connected at all and a white wire manually connected to a green wire running into the dash. I believe my car is a California model. The motor cranks without any kick, and the cranking occasionally stops abruptly as if there is an electric drop out or dead spot on the starter. Starter is only a month old and battery fully charged. Both crank sensor and cam sensor were checked and working. New oem spark plugs installed and all coil heads check out.

Get the fuel pressure checked. If its less then its quite possible that fuel pump needs to be replaced and fuel filter is got clogged. When you crank the car do you see spark coming at the spark plug? If no then its time to check the spark plugs and coil pack. If the spark plugs are not worn out and looks new then its time to check coil pack. The spark plug gets power to spark from coil pack. I agree that you have replaced the spark plugs and coil pack checked out.But is there spark coming when you crank that is necessary. If all the above possibilities mentioned above checked out OK/perfect then it’s a electrical issue and the wiring's in the car needs to be checked. The car gets power from the battery to get started. so the wires from battery needs to be checked one by one.
The other main possible thing to check is power at ignition switch.Check with meter .there should be 12 volt in meter. If the connections are not proper then ignition switch will not let the car to start it can be very much possible.Get the connections re checked. As most of the possible options are checked and replaced by for this problem. So all the above mentioned possibilities needs to be checked and confirmed.
Thanks. Keep updated for any more query. You can rate this solution and show your appreciation.

How can depressing the clutch engage the starter ?

It sounds like current is feeding into the start wire off the switch. Trace the wire from the clutch switch to the ignition switch connector. Does the wire look good? Examine closely the connector and see if you see a burnt terminal, or some broken plastic in the connector, some way for the start wire to pick up current. If you see nothing wrong, IDK, probably will need a shop to chase the wiring down and find it. I don't know if a bad starter relay (stuck on) could do that, likely not if it only happens when you depress clutch and have clutch switch on.
Good luck.

Randomly won't start or even turn over, sometimes start fine. bouncing gauges

Yes it could be the key switch. You would need to check for power at the starter when it fails to crank. There is also a neutral safety switch in the circuit.

Things that could cause this is coil bad, ingnition modual failed or maybe pickup coil."sensor maybe some where..timing out which would indicate timing belt or chain or gears are broke......Keep in mind these are just some things that could cause your problem and gives you ideal what to look for........hope this info helps and good luck....Please rate this post and if you need more help then fill free to contact me and we will try to get ya back on the road......

2003 infinity i35 won't crank. good battery

If the ignition switch is good and you are certain it works fine, did you realize there is a TSB for this condition when ever you replace a infiniti starter or even some Nissan you are supposed to replace the starter relay also, but it goes further than that you also need to rplace the Throttle control relay with the starter relay.8_7_2012_4_44_55_am.gif

2004 buick rendezvous sometimes won't start. clicks but won't turn over. replaced starter, battery, and ignition switch. what now??

We just went through this with our 2003 Rendevous. Clicking like crazy but wouldn't start. Replaced the starter but still doing the same thing. Our next step was going to be replace the battery (which tested well) and the ignition assembly. Out of frustration, I hit the top of the hood and the headlights came on!! Further investigaton proved that the problem was a corroded ground wire on the battery. Hope this helps

1988 jeep won't start

Not sure if I read your post right, but you have to have a hot wire to the ignition switch from the battery, independent of anything else on the car, before the switch will work.
The CPS is a common problem on the jeeps, though. If bad, you may not get a coil signal.

Cranks and then goes dead

First check your fuel pressure it should be 41-47 psi with key on and engine off if its below 32 psi replace the fuel pump and filter. If fuel pump checks out to be good then take ignition switch out and check for burned ignition switch wires and worn ignition key tumblers and ignition lock cylinder. These cars are known for faulty ignition switches and ignition lock cylinders.Ignition switch gets to hot then it won't start until it cools off.

88 ford f150 gear shift lock

A common cause when the gear is on the steering column is a worn out pin. That pin holds the lever to the shift assembly. Try removing the gear shift lever and examine it.
  • If the bushing between the pin and the shift is worn out, replace it.
  • Examine the tip of the the gearshift and replace the shift if it's worn out.
Hope I've helped. If not please feel free to contact me with more details.

Truck will not crank. Previous owner installed crappy kill switch that initially started the problem.I by pass it and truck was running fine. Till the a ground cable came loose on the battery. There's...

It would be the ignition or those ignition wires because of the kill switch being poorly installed, id try tracing wires first and replace anything thats been cut/spliced into. if not change the ignition
