The fuel filter is located in the fuel tank and is only serviced when the fuel pump is replaced, don't know why GM did this but never the less that is the fact of the matter.

My 2005 chevy malibu is not getting gas. not sure if it is the built in anti theft causing it or if it is the fuel pump. how can u tell the difference. (the security theft light goes on and off) and where...

Hello pass.... The fuel pump is in the gas tank. The malibu does not have any fuel filters it only has a strainer on the fuel pump itself. You will have to drop the gas tank to get to the fuel pump.
The Malibu Classic (8th letter of VIN is "F") with the 2.2 Ecotech 4-cylinder engine has a fuel filter between the fuel tank and the rear axle. One end of the filter has a threaded connector and the other is a typical compression style. Regarding the antitheft system, if that is the problem I recommend that you contact an autoelectric repair shop and get them involved as they have the diagnostic tools and the wiring diagrams to get to the bottom of these complex devices. Fuel filter

On the Malibu's with either the 2.2L or 3.5L engine the fuel filter is part of the fuel pump module inside of the tank and is, in theory, a "lifetime" fuel filter. If the filter should ever clog the pump module has to be replaced.

Fuel pump filter

If you have a Malibu the filter is located in the fuel tank.
If you have a Malibu Classic it's located near the rear bumper behind the fuel tank.

The fuel strainer attaches to the lower end of the fuel pump module. The fuel strainer is made of woven plastic. The functions of the fuel strainer are to filter contaminants and to wick fuel. The fuel strainer normally requires no maintenance. Fuel stoppage at this point indicates that the fuel tank contains an abnormal amount of sediment or contamination.

Hope help with this (remember rated and comment this help)..
