Question about 2000 Chevrolet Cavalier

2 Answers

My check engine light came on. I had it checked with a scanner. I was told the code came up that it was the gas cap is not sealing and to buy a new gas cap. I did. The check engine light came back on two weeks later. Had it checked again and was told the same thing. I then asked a friend who is a mechanic, he said the problem was thr fuel purging sensor in the gas tank. To fix it I had to remove the fuel tank, or the just ignore the check engine light.

I really doubt the gas cap is the problem, that is an Urban legend, there are lots more parts to the system than that, need the actual code to even begin to help. The light comes on for over 200 different faults and each has a code.

Best not to ignore the check engine light because it also can indicate a serious running problem just as it is indicating a pollution problem now. I don't trust folks that have 'snap' answers for a given problem without any kind of testing (the fuel cap). This problem can be caused by split vent hoses or fuel filler hose, sensors that leak or read incorrectly--the list goes on. Smoke generator tests can help track this down but require intelligent analysis to replace or repair the correct component. Finding someone like this to take the time to be at least fairly sure of a cure before loading the car up with unnecessary parts is a rare find. Good luck!

In most cases the Fuel cap is the problem when that code appears. I had this issue on my 2005 Escape and found that as long as I made sure I heard and felt at least 3 clicks when I put the cap on the code stopped appearing. It could be the sensor but I have never had to replace it. The code may eventually cause the vehicle to use more fuel if the computer goes into limp mode but for the most part you can ignore it until inspection time in states that do inspections.

Service engine soon light came on, I took it to get it checked out, they said it was the gas cap not sealing properly, got a new gas cap, the light went out, it has only been a few hours, it is on aga

there is, unhook the battery let the car set for an hour and re hook it. but i can tell you it will come back on. the reason they told you it was a gas cap is the code told them it was an evap/purge system problem. this is very commonly the gas cap. but in your case it might not be as the light came back on.

I cannot get my check engine light to stay off. It comes on and off and I was told it was the gascap. The ABS light wasnt reset when I had some repairs done. How can I get them both to stay off.

Some auto parts stores have pressure testers to check the seal on your gas cap to ensure it's not loosing pressure or you can buy a new one. I would suggest checking your vehicle for trouble codes first to be sure though. If it's your gas cap it will be an evaporative emissions control code. Your abs system requires a separate scanner to check for problems but usually it is just the sensor that goes bad and needs to be replaced.

CHECK GAS CAP / ENGINE SERVICE ARE ON

Most likely an evap system fault code stored in engine computer. Best bet and cheapest thing is go to the dealer and buy a new cap. Install the cap and drive the car for a few days if the light goes off, your all set, if not you need to check for codes. Then probably find a leak or a faulty evap vent valve or purge valve.

Check Gas Cap alarm comes on and engine light is on

You gas cap is not on tight enough to seal causing the Check Engine Light to come on. When you tighten your gas cap you need to tighten it until it clicks at least 5 times, if it is tight than the seal on the gas cap may be bad. Replace with a OEM GM gas cap or a quality replacement that meets OEM specs.

Every time I fill up with gas my check engine light comes on and the car sputters and runs like ****. The check engine light comes on for a couple minutes then goes off, after a while the car starts...

I don't know for sure, but I suspect the gas cap seal is leaking. Check the gas cap seal and mating surface for dirt. Buying a new cap might also be an option if you want to try that.

The engine light comes on. When the gas tank is

Most likely an EVAP code. Need to scan it to get the specifics.

Check engine light

you were told your vehicle has small/large evap leak detected? The leak could be coming from any number of components. Fuel tank seal, evap purge valve, check valve. The best way is to find the leak with a smoke machine. It is designed to find leaks in the evap system. There is a port with a green cap in the engine compartment. This is where the hose from the machine attaches to. Turn machine on. Where ever you see smoke, this is where the leak is.

Bought locking gas cap and now check engine light comes on.

well i dont think that would have anything to do with the gas cap and is a total coincidence. i would take the truck to advance auto parts or auto zone and have them scan the computer for codes
