Question about 1987 Volvo 740
Check your voltage amplifier for the spark, it sits on the inside of the fender , look in your manual. If it is not grounded to the metal well it will not work right. Remove it and clean the back side, fine steel wool
does well. Or it may not be working
It amplifies the low level signal from the computer to a level that the coil can use to generate a spark
I have the benefit of having a spare one for testing.
It would not be the first one that had that problem
The other thing to check is the little coil in the distributor . It needs replacing every 100000 or so there is a spec for the resistance through it and the plate it mounts on can be loose.
Find a small shop that knows volvo's and mention these 2 problems

I believe l henry was talking about the ignition amplifier like he said its on the driver side fender well behind the air box where it plugs in if you have never replaced it before you probably need to to solve your problem.the part is mounted on a heat sink the grease eventually burns up causing the amplifier to heat up thus burning out the electronic parts rendering the car unstartable .i had the same problem you do now by the way the car started right up good luck and let us know what happend

we have the same car, i would have a mechanic check the ECU. thats the first step in finding out what is wrong and why its burning so mutch fuel. it could also be your air filter, but then agian, you wouldnt be burning a tank of gas a day. well hope you get it fixed.
