Mine did this too - anyone reading this needs to deal with it right away. In my case it was due to a plastic cover melting onto the accelerator cable. Eventually it got STUCK while I was accelerating and I went speeding down the road, unable to stop my car. Luckily I was on an open stretch of road and eventually stopped by shifting to neutral and turning key off. I unhooked the accelerator cable, pulled it as far out as I could and cleaned off all the melted, sticky back gunk from the cable with goo gone. It's been fine ever since.

Only recently has my 97 Honda Passport been acting like the transmission slips...I'll be in Drive and the revs jump from 2 to 5 or 6; I'll drop it to 3, and it settles down. Last week, I was in Drive, then went to 3...then back to Drive and it jumped...and the Check Trans light came on.

My honda passport doesn't want to go forward when accelerating at a stop

Sounds like hydraulic pressure issue in the trans. If it just revs like its in neutral when you try to go. Does it drive ok for a few mins when you first start it then does this after it warms up a bit? If so sounds like the transmission filter is clogged up. Unfortunately it's an internal part and trans tear down is required to fix it.

There is a grinding or ticking from the transfer case.

find a live hands on mech. for all noise......
finding the sources of noise takes, hands on,
and can be dangerous to find, and to continue driving,.
and this car is not AWD, its really a part time , 4wd, made by ISUZU.
this car is honda. , badged Isuzu.
do not drive in 4wd on dry pavement , only on ice or dirt.
or you will wind up the driveline and damage it. that is the cause of the terrible noise, im sure.
see why here

now the 2wd.
that is a whole other matter if you didnt already damage parts
in 4wd.
The Honda Passport was a badge engineered version of the Isuzu Rodeo released in 1993

the Rodeo has no center differential, so can not drive
on dry pavement (ice free) safely nor damage free.

Reverse wire

backup lights dead or stuck on or blowing fuse?
the wire is on the transmission, but you never said, stick or auto.?

free match? 97?

you select rev and the tranny sends 12v to the lamps.
its that simple and is just a switch.
