There is a little cover on the left side of the shifter console. Remove the one screw and if you reach inside you'll find a short lever that you move (i think towards the rear) one way or the other and that will manually release the shifter if your key is on and the brake is depressed.

If it's not under the dash or near the kick panel on the driver's side, then check inside the glove compartment on the top part of it. For some reason, the Suzuki Sidekick has it located in the glove compartment. I'm guessing that since both cars are made identical, then it should be in the same location
this could be a bad shifter, with bad platic tip parts allowing it to rattle too much and pop out to bad detents and springs in the shift tower for the shifting railes ore bad bearings in tranny , cracked synco in 4th. (no you just checked it) the trans fer case has nothing to do with the 5sp box.
