My 2004 suzuki vitara service engine soon light is on and a smoke test has been done on it showing no leaks. What could the problem be?

It often means that you are burning antifreeze. You asked if it needs antifreeze, have you noticed any leaking out of the reservoir tank while you are running it? Sometimes when the head gasket goes it will produce a passage for the antifreeze to pass from the capillaries into the combustion chamber. It is easy to check if you have an air compressor. Remove one of the rear sparkplugs and the radiator cap. Fill the radiator and then push some air into the sparkplug hole (get a good seal in case a valve is open). Repeat with all the cylinders and watch for air bubbles coming up into the radiator. If bubbles come up or fluid is pumped out, the head gasket is blown and must be replaced. It is more likely to happen at the back of the engine because it is farthest away from the fan and therefore gets less cooling. Also check your oil for discoloration. If it is a brownish color it could mean your oil and antifreeze are mixing and has the potential to damage your bearings

Check the passanger side floor board for moisture this could indicate a bad heater core. Then I would check the engine oil and make sure its not milky looking (head gasket). make sure when you fill it let it run with the cap open with you looking into the cap to be sure is circulating and not vapor locked (air pocket)

I have a Mazda which in Australia (here) is called a 323 Astina, overseas a 323f, Familia, etc.
It uses a 2.0L Mazda KF Engine very similar to (in fact co-developed with) the Suzuki H20A engine, except designed to be transverse, variable resonance induction and other different tuning inc. 7000 redline, and probably not as reliable as an H20A.
I've had the engine rebuilt because I want to keep this car for a while and it needed it. Oil slipped past the rings which burned out grooves on one of the exhaust valves on Cyl-6 to the point where that cylinder had no compression...
... but I still get smoke occasionally, as you describe yours except not as often nor on the open road at speed. It happened ever since the first time I changed the oil after the rebuild. The tech who rebuilt it used a grade of oil I couldn't find and, liking synthetics, I used a lighter oil.
About the time you were writing your message, I replaced the rubber intake pipe feeding the throttle body and I noticed the inside of the intake manifold lined liberally with oil. The old pipe had oil only at one end.
The pipe I replaced didn't just go from the air mass sensor on the filter box to the throttle body. There was also a large pipe to an air reservoir (a lengthy pipe sealed at one end so that if you open the throttle quickly, you don't have to wait for more air to be filtered before it enters the engine, supposedly) and a tiny pipe to PCV valve.
It's not a long pipe so it's easy to look inside. The reason I'm boring you with all of that detail is because you'll almost certainly have a different one, but this is still most probably something you'll find feeding your intake manifold a supply of oil. The PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) valve runs from one of the rocker covers (not that we have rockers) into a pipe feeding into this intake pipe. It's supposed to **** air in from the intake pipe due to a vacuum created by another pipe connecting from another part of the crankcase to the intake manifold (after the throttle body so it has a lower pressure than the intake pipe) and that might be happening in my engine but oil is, or was before the rebuild, seeping back into the intake pipe.
Being a transverse version of your engine, the PCV valve is on the front bank and the pipe from it to the intake pipe is quite short. The PCV valve is also situated above (if I remember correctly) a cam lobe so at higher revs, the oil gets flicked up into the PCV valve.
... so use an oil which is thicker at high temperature, do a compression test, or as I'm considering, run the pipe from the PCV valve into a canister to catch the oil before feeding the gasses into the intake manifold. That way less of the thinner oil will be burned off and I'll have a better chance at getting away with using it.
I use 15W40 Oil - viscosity of 15 weight (units?) when hot, 40 in Winter (which the W stands for). I should use 20Wxx, perhaps, to burn less oil.
This engine likes thin oil, it just goes on to liking it enough to inhale it. This engine also likes higher revs.

The fill pipe is right back there. Check to see if a hose has been damaged. Check the spout area, is there a overflow pipe or a seam that could be leaking into the trunk?

which of 4+ engine and year,????? G16,J20 , H25 , H27??????
all norm, all top end work puts oil there.
burn it off. (every time ive done this it smokes, countless)
but if put on wrong not reading the FSM book on this job, did you,
many of these engines have an RTV gluing step. you skip that?
gee post engine and can show that page.
if you get smoke for more than say 15min, there is leak.
look for leaks that is step max in the book, says ,start engine
and find leaks. always. if it leaks then, now you know why.

some gaskets make funny turns, that can not steal with out RTV.
RTV is (silicon gasket caulk) RTV is origional name from 1965 to now. named by Dow Corning long ago. and shows up as that word
in the FSM book. by suzuki. and their own partnumber too.
google it.
use the type safe for OXYGEN sensors.

How do i reset service engine soon light on 2000 suzuki grand vitara


in the USA,
there are 3 ways on all cars.
  1. press reset on the scan too.
  2. pull battery neg lug, and lose the radio , and nav. codes,
  3. pull the ecu memory fuse. (no engine stated, so can answer)

99 suzuki vitara stalls out all the time engine lite comes on. Now it won't start. Almost like it is not getting any gas.

Ses light is on code comes back as catalitic converter is problem, but just got it back from mecanic after having engine work done it is not miss fireing runs beautifuly no problems at all but cant have...

When the Check Engine light (or Service Engine Soon) is turned on, the systems computer control unit (called the PCM) has sensed a fault in the electronic controls of the engine and/or the emission system. When this happens you will seldom feel the car engine run any different. There are about 200 possible faults that turn the Check Engine light on, to know what has developed a problem you must have the system tested, this is called an OBD2 fault code test, Kragen and Autozone parts stores (USA only) do this testing for free.

The service engine soon light came on. I went to auto zone and they found trouble code P1456. How do I fix this?


hi, dear friend, this is an obd2 trouble code table. it can help you understand the meaning of code.
The best way to fix a P1456 error (small evap. leak) on your Nissan is to have a "smoke machine" test done on it. This machine is hooked up to your car and pushes smoke throught the evap. system. The smoke will shoot out of the leak and indicate its precise location. You can also try getting a new gas cap and make sure that it clicks 3 times when you close it after filling your tank. Also, NEVER leave your car running when your fueling up as this can cause your "service engine soon" light to come on. The best choice however is doing the smoke test as this will elimiate any guess as to the location of the leak. Nissan dealers can perform this smoke machine test for you for about $90.00 and can save you alot of money by pin-pointing the leak so you don't keep buying parts you don't need.

My vitara p reg 2L started smoking on start up, now it is misfiring any ideas where i start, I can't see any spark plugs in the engine-maybe i'm blind or stupid


Many new cars hide most of the engine underneath plastic covers that must be removed to find anything. The smoking problem may or may not be serious, but it's likely that the spark plugs will show black oily deposits on the interior insulators. Cleaning or replacing the plugs will usually make the engine run ok for awhile, but with continued smoking, it will foul the plugs again. If all the plugs are fouled, then look for something like a bad PCV valve that creates crankcase pressure when plugged. Worn out valve seals which allow oil to leak into the cylinders can account for smoking only on start-up. These seals can usually be replaced without pulling the cylinder head. Hope this helps!
