Question about 2004 Dodge Stratus

Open Question

My 2004 Dodge Stratus runs rough at start up and will idle very low or run rough at a stop light. Once I accelerate, it may sputter just a bit then it will smooth out and run fine. The only other time it may hesitate and sputter just a bit is at full speed when I accelerate again slightly. If I run on the A/C, the car will actually rough idle down to a complete shut off if at a redlight or if it hadn't already shut down will shut off with the A/C on once I go to accelerate from a red light to a green light. Help! I've no other problems with the car and have kept it in good shape with routine maintenance.

SOURCE: car hesitates and sputters

It seems like you have a vacuum leak in a hose some where. Check under the hood for any rubber hoses that are dry-rotted, cracks, or sharp bends in any of them.

I have a 2004 Dodge Stratus (4cyl) that idles rough (almost stalls out), dies on start up and recently had a flashing engine light (backfire error). Any suggestions? No other issues, water pump and timing...

Could be the idle air control, once these start hanging up inside, they can cause as variety of problems with idle speed (can become wildly random) or simply a failure to idle at all.

These links should help:
Where is the idle air control valve located on 2004 Dodge Stratus

2004 stratus idle air control Bing

This could also be caused by a failing ignition pack.

Idles roughly, then low when stopped or in park, then dies. Decreasing gas mileage. Slow to accelerate

Sometimes that's caused by a vacuum leak near the manifold area.

Sometimes air in the coolant will cause an idle problem. Air will keep the air temp sensor from sending proper info.
Hope this helps.

My 2003 dodge stratus idles rough like it might die out then when you start pressing the gas to accelerate it has a tough time accelerating right away but then when it starts goin it gets smoother also...

check or replace fuel filter for clogging up. if it does clog up, then you will not get enough fuel to engine to run it properly. it will stall at stops, and be very sluggish on takeoff. check fuel pressure if need be. could also be a bad catylist convertor. so check above first. Rent a fuel pressure guage from advance or oreilley's and check fuel pressure if needed. they will tell you the proper fuel pressure for your car.

Rough idle, sputtering like its outta gas but it aint.

Could be a vacuum leak as it falls off under acceleration and does not play a part then. Check for broken or cracked hoses.....
