Was the old alternator tested to see if it was bad? If it was and all wires are in good shape and reconnected the new alternator the new one may be bad also. It can happen.

Battery light keeps comming on

Failing alternator or battery.
Using a volt meter, check the battery voltage across the terminals with the engine running. If lower than 13 volts, then replace alternator.

I'm assuming the alternator drive belt is adjusted correctly and the engine idle is above 500 revs.

ALTERNATOR/BATTERY PROBLEM

I would look for a large fuse or fuseable link between the alternator and the battery.

1998 mercury mystique LS battery light on , battery only 1 yr. old. ? Is it my alternator ?

If all the connections are clean and tight at the battery it is likely. The alternator should put out about 14.2 volts when the engine is at a fast idle (about 1500 RPMs). Auto parts stores will test your alternator for free.

How do i test my alternator to make sure it still works good

Start the engine and turn on all your lights and your a/c blower on high. You should have 13 to 14.5 volts at your battery, if you have less then 13 volts. Then you have a weak alternator or faulty voltage regulator, to test the regulator, turn everything off and check the voltage again with the engine running. You should have 13 to 14.5 volts again, if anything different as to being too high or low, then you have a faulty regulator which is built in to the alternator so your still going to have to replace it. To test the battery, you should have 11.5 to 12 volts with everything off and engine not running.
Good luck and hope this help. A battery older then 4 years may no long be able to hold a charge and will need to be replaced. A bad battery will cause the alternator to fail much quicker then a good battery.
Thank you for using Fixya

My 2000 mercury Mystique wont start when i turn the key in the ignition is just clicks what could it be alternator starter or battery?

first check battery voltage. should be 12 volts or a little over. IF the battery is low then charge battery and then load test battery. If you remove you battery and take it to local parts store most will check for you. if battery load test good but was low on voltage then I would check to see that alternator is charging while engine is running. should be charging aprox 13.9 volts. if battery had full voltage and load tested good then most likely the starter is bad.

Jumped battery and car runs for a few minutes then lights just fade and car stalls, what is going on?

Could be couple of things,
A bad battery not holding a charge, should be a little over 12 volts with engine off.
A bad alternator not charging, should put out between 14 to 15 volts with engine running.
If there is an advanced auto near you, take them there, they will check them for free.

The battery light is on what does that mean

generally, the battery lite will come on due to a charging problem. 1st ck to make sure belt is on and tight. 2nd if you have volt meter, with vehicle running, ck voltage at battery terminals. should be over 13.5 volts, if not, verify there is 12 volt supply to large red wire at alternator. if there is voltage at alternator, but less than 13.5 across battery with it running, replace alternator
