Question about 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee

3 Answers

My 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee won't start in very hot weather. Acts like it has a vapor lock. Starts right up in cold weather but here in Iowa we have been having hot humid weather and it won't start but once I finally get it started it runs fine. What can I do to fix this problem?

My guess is there is ingress, via a leak, of un-metered air after the Mass Air Sensor. The air under the hood can get very hot on a sunny day. If there is a leak in the filtered air ducting or one of the vacuum tubes has become detached from the intake manifold/plenum then sucking in hot air will make the fuel mix to the engine to lean to fire up. Check you ducting especially where it joins the throttle for any cracks or loose joints. Check crank case breather pipe connection to duct. Check each vacuum tube, after the throttle, connecting with the manifold for leaks. Check the brake vacuum servo pipe for good connections

I have heard of this problem several times with older Jeeps but never could figure out why only certain vehicles had the problem. What I do know is many of the ones who had this problem found a solution by insulating the fuel line from the engine heat. I hope this is your solution also.

Before you go off and start working on this try to give yourself a place to start....start with a computer scan of the system to see if any codes may be there indicating what system you may have to work on testing, yes it may be vapor lock, a quick test is to hit the fuel lines very lightly with compressed air to cool the lines and try to start it, if that works you are on to the problem, may have to wrap the lines with foil to try to keep them cooler.
Also the Idle Air Control motor may be frozen in the cold start position causing the injectors to spray very rich for cold temps but not lean enough for warm temps.
Hope this helps.
Happy Motoring!!

My 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee has a hard time starting after I tow my Mini Light travel trailer in hot weather. What is causing it?

Solenoid is probably overheating, or positive lead to starter is loose, if so, tighten it. You may want to replace starter.

Starts and runs good when cold , shut engine off after motor gets hot , will not start back. After I let the engine cool down it will start back. When weather is cooler starting back is not a problem ,...

Sounds like the coil has gone bad. This is usually the syptoms of this. When it is in the non crand status cool the coil down quickly with ice and see if it doesnt crank.

It is most likely the Ignition Coil overheating, it is probably cracked on t he outer casing somewhere. It could also be the Camshaft Position sensor. I would start with the Ignition Coil. are you getting a problem code.

Welcome to the forum. Your question has to many variables. Cold weather out here in Cen Cal this time of year is mid 40s. Is the problem when the vehicle is cold as in ovrernight but starts ok when it is warm? Does it crank OK but seem like it's not getting fuel? If you hold the throttle slightly open, does it start OK?
