Removal Procedure

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable
  2. Remove the lower steering column cover panel by removing the screws.
  3. Disconnect the electrical connector for the immobilizer detection coil, if equipped.
  4. With the key in the ignition turned to the position designated ACC, remove the lock cylinder by pressing down the detent spring with a 2.5 mm alien wrench or other suitable tool, and pulling the lock cylinder out of the switch cylinder housing. 5. Install the lower steering column cover panel with the screws. Tighten the lower steering column cover panel screws to 3 Nm (27 inch lbs.).
  5. Connect the negative battery cable

How do i remove the entire iognition switch assemble in mitusbishi gallant 1991

Hi Bruntwood, Disconnect the battery, and then unscrew the screws fitted underneath which hold the plastic cowling surrounding the steering column and then remove the two halves. Disconnect the electrical socket from the plug and then identify the four blind bolts holding the saddle of the ignition barrel and switch. There are a few ways of removing those bolts, but the easiest is to tap them out with the correct sized cold chisel. Once removed the ignition barrel and switch can then be removed and replaced. Assembly is the reverse procedure. Regards and have a happy new ignition barrel and switch and new year. John

How to remove barrel,demonstration

remove the steering lock barrel can only be done with the original key and the ignition in the acc position .this can be done in situ but some motors like VW you have to drill the hole to push the pin in so you need to know where it goes and to get to it you have to remove the steering column

Hello again - thank-you for your advice on my key/ignition problem- advising replacing the lock set- however its sunday, I am stuck on a road in spain with the window open and badly parked - is there

y but you will require tools and a knowledge of the vehicle. You will need to remove the plastic surround of the steering column and the covers under the dash. When you can see the back of the ignition assembly you will see round dome shaped bolts holding on a clamp which secures the assembly in place. These will need to be removed using a cold chisel or something which can cut into the domes so th the domed bolts can be unscrewed and the ignition barrel removed. Once that has been done, unscrew the ignition swith from the end of the barrel and operate it with a screw driver. You will be able to turn on the ignition and drive the car. Best regards John.

just a guess on this one , some ignition barrels have a button underneath the key barrel , and to remove key you must push this in and turn key back one more klick away from start direction .

i am hoping that original key is in ignition , you can get ignition barrel replaced with new keys , but some steerng parts need dissasembling .
and some are pains to remove .
hope it was this simple !

The starter (ignition) switch does not return automatically to the "on" position after starting. Does this mean I have to replace the switch or can it be repaired?

it is the barrel at the rear of the ignition switch, you do not need to replace the whole of the ignition switch just the part on the back if you remove the stearing cowling and look behind the ignition barrel you will see either a white or black ( might be any colour though) item with wires going into it, all that is needed is that part to be replace, just unplug the wireing part and remove the ignition box from the back of the barrel and replace, hope i explained that correctly for you

Key's snapped off inside ignition

Hi I would suggest you ring the Automobile association, and see whether one of their mobile mechanics can solve your problem. extracting a car key from the barrel may be more difficult than it appears. He, the mobile man may have done it before and have the right tools for the problem.
