The fast idle for ac is not working. I have the 2.9 lit engine 1988 model xj40. What I want to know -does my car have a fast idle sensor for the ac or what give it it's fast idle and where to locate it.or is it all computerized.

The XJ 40 DOES NOT have a compliance plate as it is the first year they were owned by a American company Ford. The XJ 40 better known as the XJ 6 was fords experimenl change over. This went on from 1988 to 1994 and with every year you will find different things they changed that were problems with the preceding year . like the 88 & 89 had digital dash boards that failed a lot to hard wiring breaking so on 90 they changed that as well as a engine upgrade

1988 Suburban with 5.7 TBI runs fine until warms up. Goes to fast idle and when it comes off fast idles won't start back until cools down.

Lets start at the beginning. Is the check engine light on ?
You have an idle air control valve which could be sticking open or shorted to ground. You should be able to unplug it to test. There also could be a gasket or hose that is opening up and causing a huge vac leak.

if it is a carby model the check the fast idle cam for the auto choke or adjust the choke setting

HOT or COLD engine or both?????????
No year, car, and worse, no engine size stated.
IN GENERAL: works on all Gas cars 1988 to now (EFI)

this is easy, once you know EFI .
EFI does many things, it fuels engine, and creates spark
and 10 other things but on is called, idle controls.
it does this 2 ways, 1 is spare advance (fast) and the other is the ISC. the idle speed control valve. (its just and air valve)
so what did you see. you saw, the ISC SYSTEM (note the word system) is failing
that begs the question.
was humpty pushed , or is humpty bad.
it can be either of both if murphy rears his ugly head.
low RPM
The ECU sees this , (by virtue of the RPM sensors) and tries to
open the ISC valve, if it can the valve is dirty, clean it.
if it can and the valve does open and more air flows, and RPM
dont pick up then, the engine is running lean, or the EGR is stuck open.
I can discover the EGR deal with my right toe.
easy, to raise idle , ISC stuck (clean it)
harder, EGR stuck open.
impossible is gross fueling issues, or worse.

that is how i tell ...
no some exceptions.
if the TPS is not signaling, Im at idle, no idle controls are possible.
or if the ECU/PCM is in LIMPHOME mode, idle controls can be suspeneded.
so not scanning all bad running engines, misses the boat.
i can got to great details but cant due to no year, or engine stated

The year and engine tells me, what fuel controls are used.
some are air density others are speed density systems and
work 100% opposite to each other,,, thus my pause...........

Changed the plugs and wires of a 1988 sunbird car now goes from a slow idle to a fast idle . when the fast idle kicks on the check engine light now comes on.Car seem to run fine

Was there a problem before you changed the wires and plugs? Did you buy off the shelf wires or wires sized for you make/model? In order to replace the wires did you disconnect any rubber vacuum lines and forget to replace them?

yeah i do have the same problem..........before. Yes its that throttle nagle sensor. you have to replace the whole throlle body cause the sensor is not a bolt on part.....goodluck!
