I installed a mechanical oil pressure gauge on the fitting where the oil pressure sender is mounted. I mounted the pressure gauge low by the steering column so I can see it but its not in the way so I know what my oil pressure is.
The first parts to starve for oil are the camshafts and valve lifters. I had the same problem and snapped the exhaust camshaft on my passat 1.8 turbo. I have the factory service manual from VW and I rebuilt the motor myself except for some machine shop work so I am familiar with the engine.
With the right fittings you can keep the idiot light but you will know exactly what the oil pressure is. You didnt mention a vehicle type but a common issue with the four cylinder motors (the 2.0 and the1.8turbo) is that the oil pump pickup screen is the size of a fifty cent piece which builds up with sludge and becomes the size of a thumb tack.
Even if the idiot light is not on you are operating with low oil flow and pressure. You need to have someone remove the oil pan and clean the pickup screen.
