How can I dismantle the safety break release instead of puting a key in it every time to put the car in gear?

1990 Honda Accord, I need to disable the brake release to allow me to put the car in drive. There is a saftey brake release that the only way you can put the car in gear is to stick your key in the safety brake release hole, put the car in neutral, start the car then drive.

1990 Honda Accord How can I adjust my safety break release on my car. It is a key hole located next to my automatic gear shift..I cannot put it in gear unless I put the key in the hole, then put the car in neutral, then start the car. If I put the car in park, then I must repeat the routine. Thanks

Let me see if I understand. You cannot simply put the key in the ignition, place your foot on the brake and start the engine. You must have your foot on the brake to put the car in gear. You must use the valet key to get the car started? What year Accord do you have? Try this. Get in your car. Close the door. Lock and unlock the doors with the door switch. Insert your key into the ignition and then remove it 5 times in rapid succession. Lock and unlock you doors again with the switch. Then try your remote. Or maybe it's unlock and then lock then do the key thing and unlock and lock again. Anyway, try both, one of them should work.

Got a research on this and got opinions from my fellow mechanics... Its just a feature that will require an electrical bypass which is not adviseable for it will be prone to electrical failure. Its gonna be a trial and error thing that will require an on hand tracing on which wires goes to where. If you have knowledge on auto electrical system then you can give it a shot but if you dont then Its better to leave it that way. Hope this helps and have a good one!

What should we do?

Hi there,
There is a (silly) safety lock on the ignition to stop it starting in gear, or the key being removed if not in park, and a sensible safety lock on the gear shift to stop kids letting it roll down a hill. Try putting your foot firmly on the brake, press the park release button beside the gear shift, while pulling the shifter out of park and back into park.
Getting the key out: Sometimes the steering wheel is placing pressure on the steering lock and key release mechanism, so try turning the steering wheel in any direction it can go while trying to release the key. It should come only out when you are in park.

Ignition switch won't release key when it is put in park. But when I removed switch and key tumbler, the key tumbler/cylinder releases key. Why won't the key release when it is in park?

Most newer models have a safety feature called
shift interlock. This prevents the key from being turned back
to the lock position if you forget to place the gear selector in park.
Depending on the model,
If it uses a cable, it may be sticking or needs adjusting.
If it uses an electrical solenoid. may be blown fuse or park switch.
Tap, shake, and pull up on the shifter and make sure it's in park.

Automatic gearshift is sticking...very hard to get it from park to drive

Your facing a failing safety release mechanism. when you put the key in the ingition and step on the brake pedal a safety release should be heard in the gear selector, when this device retracts now you can select a gear position , here the thing it say 2011 Hyundai Elantra? this is too new to be doing this This can be done irregardless of warranty,

I got a problem when i shift my car to reverse. it will not move after i release the break. after few sesonds it will suddenly move with sound after i apply more gasoline.

Your transmission is going out and MUST be serviced asap!!
Other issues if you have a manual tranny then the above applies, automatic, the below applies
For this car, it can be really pricy or you can take my advise. I would recommend that you remove the 1 or 2 screws located on the reverse side of the shifter!. once you do this, you basically deactivate a safety device that is preventing you from shifting your car into gear! The safety device basically will not allow you to shift until you press firmly on the breaks and the key is installed. TAKE IT FROM AN EXPERT who has been there done that hundreds of times. you can find the screws on the reverse side of the shifter, just feel for them with your fingers.

I have just replaced the brake booster and now i am trying to connect the brake pedal switch (i cant put my car into gear

if you want to put it into gear, turn the key forward(not crank)
look underneath by the brake pedel
there is a neutral safety switch(not break light switch)
depress it and you can shift into gear

ITS NOT THE SAFETY SWITCH ON BAKE PEDAL,WENT THRU SAME THING, HUSBAND TOOK IT APART, AND THE SPRING WAS BROKEN. THE SPRING IS PART OF THE BRIGHT PINK SAFETY SWITCH, EVERYONE IS TALKING ABOUT. IT KEEPS PRESSURE ON IT, SO WHEN ITS PRESSED IT RELEASES IT. WE OWN A 2006 CHRYSLER 300..

2006 Nissan X Trail Gear Shift Stuck in Park. No warning lights are on, car starts fine, gear shift stuck in park and will not move unless I manually do it by depressing the shift lock with a key or screw...

This is not a permanent fix, but you'll be able to shift and drive...this is a "safety feature" when you're break lights aren't working...it may be a fuse issue, i found that didn't help either.

How to drive it while it's "broken" On the top left of your gear shift is circle that looks like a button that is only 3/4 there...see picture (it's circled in red)

e024280.jpg
pry that off with a key or something... now restart your car, push on the break and at the same time insert a key or something into the now open hole...while pushing down use the other key to shift into reverse. You will need to do the same thing to shift back into park.

Good heavens that is the most inneficient safety feature I've ever heard of. How about instead of leaving the car immoble and keeping you in a scetchy neihborhood to get mugged they just "invent" a warning light notification. grr

Car will start but gear shift is locked

follow instructions in manual for SHIFTLOCK RELEASE

Turn off car.
Engage Parking Break
Take ignition key and put into shift lock release slot (near gear shift)
Push down on key and at same time MOVE gear shift to neutral.
Remove key, start car as normal and disengage parking break...

good to go.... mechanic can replace/repair if this is an ongoing issue: $85 I read somewhere...but heard it's not hard to do yourself for $35 someone else wrote.

Goodluck
