The rear wheel bearings are not adjustable. If the bearings make noise or become loose, they must be replaced.

Removal & Installation

With Drum Brakes

NOTE The wheel bearings are contained within the wheel hub and must be replaced as an assembly.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  3. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.
  4. Remove the anti-lock sensor retaining bolt and remove the sensor.
  5. Remove the brake drum retainer and the brake drum.
  6. Remove the hub retaining nut dust cover.
    NOTE Do not use an impact gun to remove the hub retainer nut.

To install:
  1. Reinstall the hub and bearing assembly to the spindle.
  2. Reinstall the hub retainer nut. Tighten the retainer nut to 170-192 ft. lbs. (230-260 Nm).
    WARNING Do not use an impact gun to tighten the hub retainer nut, otherwise the bearings may be damaged.
  3. Install the hub retaining nut dust cover.
  4. Reinstall the brake drum.
  5. Check the brake shoes for proper adjustment.
  6. Reinstall the anti-lock sensor and the retaining bolt. Tighten the retaining bolt to 7-8 ft. lbs. (9-11 Nm).
  7. Reinstall the wheel and tire assembly. Tighten the wheel nuts to 62 ft. lbs. (85 Nm).
  8. Lower the vehicle until the wheels are supporting the vehicles weight. This will properly load the suspension.
  9. Tighten the spindle-to-control arm bolt to 52-79 ft. lbs. (70-98 Nm).
  10. Tighten the tie rod-to-spindle bolt to 75-102 ft. lbs. (102-135 Nm).
  11. Finish lowering the vehicle.
Road test the vehicle and check for proper operation.

Remove the brake caliper
Remove the disc, (rotor)
Remove the 34mm nut on the axel shaft
Remove the three (3) bolts from the back side
You will need a wheel puller (three jaw will work well)
Place the puller over the hub and tighten, this will push the shaft out of the hub. Now you have to pull the hub assy. out of the mounting bracket. I found hitting each side,of the hub with a lead hammer to work well. Don't forget to disconnect the ABS senser on the back side of the hub assy.
Do not over tighten the 34mm axel nut when you install the new assy. If you use an impact whrench on it you will damage the bearing.

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. For additional information, refer to Section 100-02 .
  1. Remove the wheel and tire assembly. For additional information, refer to Section 204-04 .
  1. Remove the rear brake disc (2C026). For additional information, refer to Section 206-04 .
  1. Remove the differential housing cover (4033) and drain the lubricant. For additional information, refer to Differential Housing Cover in this section.
  1. Remove the differential pinion shaft (4211).
    1. Remove the differential pinion shaft lock bolt (4241).
    1. Remove the differential pinion shaft.

    Remove the U-washer (4N237).
    1. Push the axle shafts (4234) inboard.

i'm assuming you don't have a hubshark,this is a tool that will alllow you to remove the bearing while the knuckle is attached to the car,you may be able to rent this tool at a auto prts store .if not you need to remove the entie knuckle,first remove the trailing arm bolt,then the lateral link bolt{long and stubborn bolt},disassemble the brake shoes and parking brake cable,abs sensor if equipped the knuckle to strut bolt{no marking necessary they are not eccentric} then you need a to use or borrow a press to remove hub and bearings good luck

Bad wheel bearing. I do believe yours are pressed in. You can remove the spindle and take it to a shop and have them replace the bearing.

Just replaced both of mine two weeks ago. (I'm at 130K miles)

A couple of things...
- You will need to disassemble your rear brakes (calipers and disks)
- My wheel caps were rusted on so I had to destroy them by using a screwdriver to chisel them open (like you would do with a tin can) Try to pry them off if you can. I am planning on replacing them in order to save the threads on the spindle from rusting. ($5 each at dealer)
- I had a slide hammer handy in order to pull one of the hubs off the spindle. They were rusted on pretty bad on mine. One of the hubs was destroyed in the process of pulling.
- Re-used the original nuts. They are compression nuts (same type as on the fron driveshafts) but they came off no problem so I just reused them. You might want to have one handy in case you wreck the old nuts. (They range from $6 to $8 each at the dealer)
- 32mm axle nut socket
- Use the socket to tap the new hub in if required. Don't beat too ******* it though...
- Chiltons suggests torquing them down to 170 lb-ft (if I remember correctly)

Noticeably less noise now when I'm cruising at 40 mph. I used to have some kind of cyclic harmonic grinding going on from back ther that seemed to be speed related.

The new hubs also seems to have improved my "shimmy" under braking condition. Although, I can't say for sure if it was the hub itself that was the problem or the fact that I relubed my rear brake pins in the process of doing the hub.

How do you know if you need a 4wheel or 2wheel alignment? 2000 Mercury Cougar.


Most FWD vehicles can have a four wheel alignment performed. A 2 wheel alignment is mainly for vehicles that are rear wheel drive. There are exceptions but the 2000 Mercury Cougar is a 4 wheel alignment.

I have a 1999 cougar and the back end keeps pulling out to the right like my drivers side wheel is locking up. What could be causing this??


Hello, some of the Front wheel drive cars used a rear suspension system which requires an Alignment just the same as the front end. You can get the rear Alignment separately but it is usually a packaged 4 wheel Alignment. Jack up the back end of the car and turn the wheels and check for them turning hard. This will indicate a brake or bearing problem.

The rear wheels do have an Emergency brake which can cause problems dragging even when not used. The bonded lining falls off the brake shoe when it rusts and the lining falls onto the rotating parts and gets ground up. Sometimes you will hear a noise like loose rust as you stop and start at low speeds. You can also have a sticking rear Caliper or drum brake.

The rear hubs have bearings which can fail; usually you will hear noises or have vibrations when the bearings are worn loose. Your best bet is to remove the rear brake rotor and visually inspect the Emergency brakes and feel the turning of the rear hub bearing. If you do not have the rear brake assembly on the car it will be easier to work on the bearing. Bearings are made 2 ways. The Sealed bearings are replaced as a hub unit. The Serviceable bearings have removeable bearings and races.

You want to have the rear bearing in good shape before having an Alignment. The Sealed bearing hubs are the easiest to replace by removing and replacing only bolts. The Serviceable bearings can require punching out and installing a new race, then packing the bearing with grease.

Some shops do both Brakes and Alignment and some just do the brakes. You can fix what you can handle before getting an Alignment or pay for both jobs. I hope you find my solution very helpful.

How do you remove a front wheel bearing from a 2000 mercury cougar? How do you get the housing piece apart?


The bearing is pressed into the steering knuckle. If you don't have a press, take the knuckle to a machine shop and they can do it for you.

this is a one piece part hub and bearing assy. even if auto parts sales you bearing separated highly recommend to replace whole unit

2000 Cougar with rumbling noise.


There are several places to look. If it is a lower pitch vibration, look into front wheel bearings and rear axle bearings. A bad u-joint will produce a higher pitched vibration and may lessen as you lift the throttle. They also will give a hi-low squeak when backing up.
