Question about 2000 Ford F250 Super Duty Crew Cabs

1 Answer

My husbands F250 started having problems this week. When he would turn the truck off to go in somewhere and come back out it wouldn't start. It is a stick, so if he was on a hill he could get it started. Now, it stopped running while being driven. We replaced the cam sensor, new fuel filter, oil change, now when it does start it is so rough it's like it's going to fall apart. Then it dies. What else should we look at?

ok, so it turned out that the fuel pump was bad. Put in a new fuel pump and it started right up. Celebration right. Well, kind of. My husband drove it, etc. drives great, nice smooth, but after he turned it off, it wouldn't start again. After a small push and a pop of the clutch he was off and running again. How aggrevating!

The ignition module is what it sounds like to me.... with the heated module functioning sporadically.
The bucking like a horse and dieing indicates a timing issue though.
are you getting any codes?

We are looking for a code reader right now. No one has one they loan out, we have a few calls in to some people that may have them. It's strange because it was running great just before this. Is there a way to test the ignition module?

sure , without running the truck (cold engine) take a hair dryer and heat the module up for a bit , start the truck and see if the problem occurs.
Also... auto zones will plug your truck or car into their scan tool and advise you of the outcome for free... Auto Zone also has tools you can borrow if you need to... and if you are traveling , they allow you to park overnight in their parking lot (so does walmart).

My best guess without being able to see the car is that the battery hard wiring is faulty.

You need to check both the condition, routing and security of the battery negative and positive leads.
You also need to check the security and condition of any additional earth leads which connect the engine to the chassis/body.

Ford has a 100k powertrain warranty on their diesels... You can get it fixed at Ford if it's part of the powertrain...sounds like it is...
with a simple deductible payment of 100 bucks... well worth it.

Starter issues with 98 Ford Windstar (3.8)

one problem that the 98 winstars ( 3,8L ) are prone to is the transmission range sensor. they are badly located and not well sealed. As a result corosion...
The starter solenoid wire ( red/ light blue ) runs throught the range sensor before reaching the ignition switch.
Try shifting back and forth between Park and L1 rapedly at least 5, 6 times and then try starting in Neutral.
If it starts the TRS is easy to replace and accesible.
( The TRS is also responsible for the transmission going into irradical kick down mode )
