When in four wheel drive, try backing up and at the same time shifting it into 2 wheel drive, the fulcrum could be stuck or the shaft it self damaged, it that does not do it. you would have to take of the drive shaft coupling, drop the transmission, take off the top cap and examine it to see if any burrs or chips are present on the sliding shaft which you slide while attempting to shift it?? Be sure to drain the oil our first, also a 1 ton floor jack would be handy to let the unit to the ground after prying it loose from the flywheel (Bolts taken out of course first!)

SOURCE: 4-wheel drive won't shift into gear

I take it you have the manual t-case shifter on the floor. If so check all your linkages from the shifter to the t-case, if all appears well, simply disconnect the linkage from the t-case and see if it moves if it does your problem is in the shift mechanism in the t-case. if it still wont move even while disconnected clean and lube the linkage. If this still doesn't do the trick. replace your linkage

Are you backing up for about 20 feet? When you put it in 4 wheel drive the hubs lock in by screwing in. When you back up they unscrew and unlock. It is either this or the vacuum actuator. But I like to start out with the free things to try first.

When my 02 silverado 2500hd is in 4x4 the tires are locked and the truck won't move until I shift back to 2hi. Differential or Encoder Motor?

You can take this with a grain of salt but I am a junior in high school taking auto mechanics and my teacher use to work for a chevrolet dealership where they had a geo tracker come in because it would drive fine until placed in 4 wheel drive. Once placed in 4 wheel it would not move because front and rear differentials were geared differently from factory causing the wheels to lock up. If it has never been able to go into 4 wheel since you have owned it I hope this will help...

a reluctant transfer case can sometimes be coaxed by shifting into reverse, backing up 10 feet, and then back to forward.

I have a 2004 chevy silverado and the 4 wheel

the most likely cause is the front axle shift motor if bad your your front axle shaft will not lock in.if there is no shifting of transfer case there is also a electric motor that engages that in .

there is a shifter motor that shifts it in and out of 4x4 when you push the button. many of these motors have gone bad.
