Oil pressure my oil pressure fluctuated drastcally between 15~45lbs @2500rpm, so I replaced the sensor and now it reads 5lbs @ idle and 15~20 @ 2500~3500rpm

put a mechanical test gage on it and see what the oil pressure really is, this is a mechanical test gage, u can buy them at most auto part stores.

Thanks, but I'm way ahead of you. Installed a mechanial gauge and it reads a steady 40psi @ idle and near 50psi @ 2500~3500.
I wonder if the dash gauge is computer controlled or independent. My orginal problem was the suburban suddenly died when after a 30min drive I pulled up to a street light. I could not restart it until it cooled down approx 30min. and then it failed again shortly there after.

Why didn't u provide ALL the information about the problem in the 1st place, we do this for free on our own personnel time, so please in the future put all the info down, and 1993 does,t have a computer controlled oi pressure gage, likely u installed the wrong sending unit, was this a dealer part, because aftermarket senders just don't work very well in GM systems.THANKS

I'm sorry you did not get to see my orginal and lengthy description of the problem including things I have already tried. It is never good to waste anothers time or duplicate efforts and for that I deeply apologize. Thank you for the advice about the difference between OEM and aftermarket parts. I paid a premium price for a NAPA part and had no reason to think it may be defective or the wrong specification. Thanks again for your valuable time and experience.

I gess its telling you liyes then? give it a good flush out with flushing oil first it could just be full of slug then put in fresh engine oil and a clean oil filter,,,now see what the oil presher is,,,if its still very low you may have oil pump problems
ps,,,a good flushing oil can knocked up with 50% red derv and 50% engine oil,,however DONT drive the car with fluhing oil in it and it takes about 15 to 20 minuets of ticking over to flush the engine out dont rev the guts out of it just let it tick over

Oil pressure sensors are color coded so if the one you took out has a different color top then the one you put in then you where sold the wrong sensor.

Oil pressure is jumping from 20lbs to 0lbs,truck almost dies then the oil pressure jumps back up to 30lbs then back to 10lbs ,

To start, take the vehicle to a dealer and ask them to screw an oil pressure gauge into the block hole and check your oil pressure whilst idling and while driving it.
I have a 1993 and it does the same thing, but the problem is only the gauge itself.
If it is actually having such oil pressure fluctuations, you may have a defective pump, a clogged pump filter screen, or a clogged oil filter.
God bless your efforts.

1997 Jeep Cherokee Sport hard to start after its warm and fluctuating oil pressure

Hi there:
It sounds like it could be oil pressure sending unit. I would check the connection on the sending unit. Below are the procedures for checking the sending unit, If it checks out good I would have a mechanical gauge set up to measure the pressure.

TESTINGTo test the normally closed oil lamp circuit, disengage the locking connector and measure the resistance between the switch terminal (terminal for the wire to the warning lamp) and the metal housing. The ohmmeter should read 0 ohms.To test the sending unit, measure the resistance between the sending unit terminal and the metal housing. The ohmmeter should read an open circuit (infinite resistance).Start the engine.Once again, test each terminal against the metal housing:The oil switch terminal-to-housing circuit should read an open circuit if there is oil pressure present. The sending unit-to-housing circuit should read between 15-80 ohms, depending on the engine speed, oil temperature and oil viscosity. To test the oil pressure sender only, rev the engine and watch the ohms reading, which should fluctuate slightly (within the range of 15-80 ohms) as rpm increases. If the above results were not obtained, replace the sending unit/switch with a new one.

Hope helps.

2001 F150 pressure gauge reads zero and light comes on when slowing down to 1st gear and stopped, sometimes light and gauge goes off and pressure returns, but fluctuates...also when gas applied and vehicle...

I assume you mean "Oil" pressure...This is the first sign of the main bearings getting to the point of needing replacement. The fact that the pressure goes up when you accelerate tells me that the oil pump is working. There is just too much bearing clearance for the oil pump to keep enough volume flowing at idle to maintain pressure. In short, it's time for an overhaul. It will be less expensive if you do it now than if you wait until you spin a bearing and destroy a crankshaft, or put a rod through the side of the engine block.

Should the oil pressure gauge fluctuate with speed

The oil pressure guage will fluctuate with engine RPM. At idle it should be approximately 20 lbs./sq.in, at high revs about 50-60 lbs./sq.in. Hope this helps any concerns you may have. Good luck!

Past weekend check engine light comes on, engine sounds and feels fine. However the oil pressure is running slightly slow

Check that the oil level is full.If the oil has been in service for more than 4,000 miles, change it. Replace the oil pressure sending unit. If nothing changes, put a mechanical gauge on the engine and read actual oil pressure. Though "acceptable" low pressure is only 5lbs, I would never accept that as safe. Minimum pressure should be at least 20-25psi and normal running pressure between 35 to 45psi.
How low is "slightly low"?

If the connection wire to the sensors are double -yes it will --if the wire is single --no.

Fluctuation on the oil pressure gauge reading

The oil pressure sending unit is a sensor with an internal diaphragm, if the internal diaphragm is damaged , or the line to the diaphragm is blocked you can get this kind of fluctuation on the oil pressure gauge.

The oil pressure value must be read by installing a mechanical gauge near to the oil pressure switch and checking the pressure.

If pressure is ok, replace the sending unit. If there is a real pressure drop, check the oil pump.

If you still get fluctualtion after replacing the oil pressure sending unit, replace the oil pressure gauge.
