Question about 1999 Dodge Caravan

My Caravan keeps overheating. I put Stop Leak in the radiator and that seemed to help for a very short period (1 day). But after that it keeps overheating. Even with coolant in the radiator. What could be the problem?

HI Are you noticing any white smoke from the exaust? Is this something just just started? Have you noticed the temp guage move back and forth while driving? thanks

I haven't seen any white smoke. The oil was checked and there was no foam and it was not milky looking. It will cool down for a second and then heat right back up.

Hello
Sounds like we can have a pluged up radator, After the van warns up ,, shut the van off and feel the radator on the core part your looking for cold spots on the radator, if your noticing this i would pull the radator and have it boild out there should be a radator shop or a auto shop by you that does this, This would be a good time to to replace the thermostat.
Let me know if i can help more

99 dodge grand caravan se is overheating about every 5 miles I continually put antifreeze in it but won't stop. Also no heat.

Sounds like a coolant leak, common problems on the caravan are water pump or radiator. No heat is due to low coolant.

Car is overheating after short drive (3/4 hour) had thermostat changed, put new coolant in radiator. radiator was pressure tested no leaks? car ok short drive to store. resevoir seems always overfilled...

The expansion tank will be more full when hot. Let it cool down and check it then. The level in the axpansion tank should go lower. If not then you may have a faulty radiator cap.
Also have you checked the cooling fan? Engine driven? With the engine off, spin the blade. Does it spin real freely? Continue to spin for more than a quick second? May have a bad fan clutch. They have fluid inside and the fluid can leak out of the seals after age.

I took my 99 dodge grand caravan to advanced auto and got a computer readout of p1491 as the error code. is this important and is this expensive?

P1491 is Radiator Fan Control Relay Circuit. MEANING: An open or shorted condition detected in the low speed radiator fan control circuit.
Some questions for you:
1. Is your Caravan overheating?
2. Is your Caravan water temperature spiking going past the midway point on the Temp Gauge before the radiator is engaged?
3. Is your Rad Fan coming-on and then turning off and back-on in a very short period of time (like under a minute?
If all of these are "No" then do not worry about it.

I have a 1993 940 Volvo that is overheating and I do not think it is the radiator. We replaced the thermostat last night and I had no problems this morning then this afternoon when I was driving home it...

Make sure the electric fans are operating as they should.
Check for a blocked radiator core,
Check water pump drive OK,
Get a radiator shop to do 'coolant gas check' for a blown head gasket (looks for combustion gas bubbles in the water system).

Overheating in my 2005 Dodge Grand Caravan

sounds like a head gasket problem not much other than replacement can fix that. if it is not a bad leak and you want a short term temperay fix try iron tight but i suggest trading it in after adding iron tight because it will stop the leak for short term but cause major problem in the long run any local parts store should have iron tight. good luck

Disappearing antifreeze

do not for any reason use stop leak that is the worst thing you can do for your van.it stops up heater cores, blockes hoses, and stops up the coils in your radiater. you will need to replace the head gaskets

Anti freeze all over the place

it could be antifreeze that was on the frame after changing the radiator the best way to tell is run car through a car that has the bottom wash or in a self wash and on... rinse... spray the area around radiator ...then check again later for antifreeze on ground

Overheating

1. start the engine and leave the radiator cap open.
2. put a cardboard cover or a rug in the front of you radiator.
3. let it runs 20 minutes or more, see if it is overheated and see the water or coolant in the radiator circulated or not. If not, as soon as you have already changed water pump. thermostate and check the hoses, no leak, I think your radiator was blocked.

Did you put stop leak before?
