You need to check the forward gear cable it may have stretched or came off its gear box that is generally located under a fron plastic trim panel, revealed inside the front cover once removed you will be able to determine whether the cable is defunct, whether the gear lube is dry(you will see what looks like the size of a dime plastic fill plug in the gear box, remove it and fill with silicone impregnated gear lube 60-80 weight, also check that the belt isn't off the pulley underside iof the mower, anytime you tip the mower be sure the spark plug wire is pulled completely off the plug and don't tip the mower too far as the oil will flood into the cylinder and the mower will either fail to start due to oil soaked spark plug/o and a real bad smoking condition when it does start, dont worry the smoke will clear up.

Its a hydrostatic drive mower all belts are good ill check this . It has a plug but I dont know if its plastic. Its on top of gear box looks like allen head plug?

Seems a whole array of problems can be a factor with these hydrostatic gear trans units, they say to check the hand brake...see if you can push it by hand in neytral..if no check the brake lever and linkage spray it down with ( WD-40 or PB Blaster) the two small actuator pins on the right side of the transaxle near where the linkage enters. Dirt can cause the transaxle to freeze up. After spraying the heck out of it and pressing the brake pedal down several times, it will loosen up and work fine...until the next time it gets dirty and freezes up again. So in short spray very heavily as it is suseptible to dirt and rust.

Many folks believe a good grade of synthetic oil works well for them(Royal Purple 20/50 weight) if there is a drain plug try draining it and filling through the plug or look above the drive belt for a possible fill plastic resevoir. A good drain (let it drip and drain a few days) and high quaity new oil can rejuvenate an old hydro very well in most cases. This is because the issue is really about the old oil having worn out its additive package of anti-foam agents. Oil in this condition allows air and moisture to become entrained in the oil and the presence of either will limit the ability of the oil to fuction hydraulically.Speaking of the drive belt check that for wear perhaps this is the culprit?

Check the set screw that holds the arm attached to the pump.

Getting into a more technical problem that has occurred many times over with these machines is inside the transfer case. There is a short shaft(brake shaft assembly) with a fine toothed spline that connects the pump to the gears in the transfer case. The spline (teeth) are known to wear right off!

If you have a Sears unit look this part up on the Sears website, I understand it is available for around 60.00?

This is only in the event the spline wipes out for your future reference.

I hope from all this you can make heads or tails out of fixing your mower.

    Hope this works for you.
    Happy Mowing!!

Why will it not go into 5 gear,It will go in 1 thru 4 but when you let out on clutch, truck won move, it goes dead. Truck will roll in neutral ........ Thanks for any Help

Are you sure that you are selecting FIFTH or are you selecting REVERSE? A "smart" car will kill the engine if you shift into REVERSE while moving forward, to prevent you from breaking the transmission.

2002 ford explorer will drive forward but wont move in reverse...what could be the cause?

bad transmission. if it shifts through gears going forward but will not do anything in reverse it is most likely a bad transmission. reverse is usually the first gear that goes out .

Why is car abruptly jolting to a stop in reverse and not moving?

Sounds like the transmission is shifting into both reverse and a forward gear at the same time. Time for a tranny overhaul. But first check the transmission fluid level.

X type will not reverse

Check your trans fluid. Look in the Owner's Manual to see if you have the shift interlock override/bypass button available. This allows the shift lever to be moved w/out pushing the brake pedal.

If it moves w/the shift interlock disengaged, it's likely an issue w/the shifter - not the transmission, but since it's a Jag....well, you're probably going to have to sell a kidney!GL,Td

You can try shifting into manual 1 to get moving then once you get going shift the lever up into Drive. This should work, then drive it to a shop to have your ****** looked at.

My 1985 montel carlo LS wont go in reverse

Check the transmission fluid level. And color. If its a brownish color, or smells burnt that is no good.

You also may want to check the shift cable. Does the car shift into reverse and just not move?

Maybe try moving forward some and try again, if its on an incline Ive seen it happen to a friends SUV.

Tranmission after starting when shift to reverse doesn't move

Though I'm not an expert on Hondas, I've been around a few trannies. An automatic transmission generally does not have a drain plug. The pan bolts are loosened and the transmission fluid is drained into a catch pan. A new gasket then applied to the pan and the pan then bolted back to position then new fluid added.
Are you sure of your fluid level? Sometimes a low level of fluid can cause a problem like this.
Hope this helps...
Good luck!
