Question about 1988 Toyota Camry

1 Answer

I have a 1988 Toyota Camry. Recently the automatic seatbelt on the driver side started malfunctioning. For awhile it would operate as long as the door was either closed or slightly open. Now it doesnt work at all. Also the headlights and the brights indicator isnt working. I have checked the fuses and they all appear fine. Any help would be great. Thanks!

Over time and useage the seat belt retractors do wear out, along with the black retractor button that clips into the door post that triggers the seat belts to retract, these parts are just like any other moveable parts, they do get worn out, you may want to call around to different salvage yards and try to match up a used one through their use of a teletype machine...the wrecking yards can locate parts all over the country with the teletype system and you will be happy too save a lot of money, you see aftyer 10 years the dealerships no longer are able to order any parts they become obsolete, however you can call Toyota just in case someone has a connection with the reclaimed factory parts department.
The high beanm indicator is a burnt out bulb that I donot think is a reasonable item to replace if you have never pulled the dash apart before to do so, it entails a lot of part removals, however if you feel confident and are mechanically inclined it can be accomplished using the utmost in care and thought.
Hope this helps!!

I have read in the owners manual that it could have something to do with a part located by the fuse box on the drivers side. Do you know what that piece would cost? I have read other people have replaced them and it worked again. Also the issue isnt with the indicator light, but actually with the lights themselves. They appear fine, i can acutally get them to come on at times, but there seems to be a short somewhere that causes inconsistencies. I think that it is actually in the twist mechanism, but dont know for sure.

Try replacing the headlight switch sounds like the rheostat inside it burnt or is slowly burning out when you engage it.

As far as the seat belt is concerned I forgot this is an older car that has a seat belt retractor on the door...this is not a simple fix..first check all the fuses in your fuse panel for a blown fuse, replace as needed, next pull up the console to look at the control module and if it is sticky, from coffee soda, spills etc., clean it up.

Still no change, there are end-of-travel switches at the front and the rear of each belt track. If these stick or go bad, they will foul out the automatic belts, pull the interior panel off behind the drivers side door, to gain access to inspect the seat belt track, you may find that the rear or front track switches are stuck down (in the on positioncausing the retractor not to work) impacted with grease and dirt. Spray a heavy amount of WD-40 to get the system backworking properly again.

I hope this works for you.

88 camry, driver lap belt won't unwind. Just stopped working. Thank you for your time. Bill

Bill, the most common issue is the belt gets twisted as it rolls up. The extra material of the fold causes the unit to not release. Usually you can coax it to release by removing covers and releasing the ratchets that lock the belt from coming out. You should not have to damage anything...

1990 camry power windows and locks donot work from drivers side also automatic seatbelt on drivers side stoped working the power lock button on passenger side works

Relays & fuses will be my first choice, but sometimes age and wear kils electronic switches, my next advice woul be your driver side control side panel inside the panel at the door may carry fuses or relays or the control panel switch may be faulty itself chec your repair book for your automobile.
