Question about 2000 Cadillac DeVille

1 Answer

I just purch. a 2000 Deville Cadillac, it started running hot after 8 or so miles, the radiator was full, the black hose along the top in the front was very hot to touch, no visible signs of a leak underneath, but after running for a few minutes I added quite a bit more water in the radiator. The oil is clean not milky looking, The dealer told me to add Dexcool in the overflow tank, could that be the reason it is running hot? Thank you for your help. Pat

If the recovery tank was empty then fill it to the top and top off the radiator (cold engine only) and manually bleed the cooling system of trapped air, u can do this by raising the front
yt of Th car as high as poss with a floor jack, then running the engine until it gets into the normal temperature zone, DON'T OVERHEAT IT, shut the engine down and let it cool, if the system has trapped air in it the system will pull the coolant out of the coolant recovery tank and displace the air

sorry about that screen locked up, to continue, the system will self bleed as it cools down, so u may have to add coolant to the tank again, try not to let it go dry, repeat if it does, after u have satisfied yourself the air is bled out run the car and see if it still overheats, if it does it is likely you have a leaking cylinder head(s) gasket, this engine is all aluminum and doesn't like to be overheated, good luck

How much coolant should be put back in radiator and overflown tank and is there a special kind to use? Does this sound like a blown head gasket? If so how much does that cost?

    Thanks again,

    Pat

U can use any name brand (Prestone, etc.) coolant that is labled long life or extended life coolant. if it continues to oveheat u have a leak in the sytem or a leaking head gasket as i mentioned

I am not sure of the head gasket, get the system bled of air and retest, but based on my experience it will be the head gaskets, but make sure what ever caused the original overheat condition is repaired along with the head gasket or it will just blow them again, they do blow by themselves if the coolant hasn't been changed as required and was dirty or discolored, to do a flush and repair the heads (in amy cases they need to be replaced) can run into $1000's

How do I change out the thermostat on my 2000 deville northstar

Partially drain the radiator (drain is at the bottom on the driver's side of the radiator - you need to remove the front air deflector panel underneath the car to get at it). Remove the air cleaner assembly. Remove the outlet hose from the thermostat housing (this hose is the one attached to the top of the radiator on the driver's side - it is NOT the inlet hose which is routed across the top of the radiator). Remove the bolts holding the thermostat housing to the water pump, then the thermostat and gasket. Carefully clean off any gasket material from the water pump and housing, install the new thermostat and gasket, and reverse the procedure. Make absolutely sure you install the thermostat correctly - in must be installed in the same orientation as the old one.

2000 cadillic deville every time i start my car it says check coolint level and it is already full of collint and it runs hot i have a new radiator, thermostat and water pump on it now

Hello: You may have a blown head gasket. You can purchase a tool kit to check for exhaust gases in the cooling system. I'd start there first.

My 2000 cadillac deville is running hot.the coolant is not getting to the motor.what is the probblem?

It's likely that the passageways in the engine and radiator are clogged up not allowing full flow of coolant to the motor.

Try to have it flushed and filled with new coolant.

Water will not flow through the radiator

take off upper hose -run car drain fluid-when draining stops add water hose to radiator top- run clear water out for 5 minutes-temporarily re-attach hose run for 3 minutes-open hose and let drain again for a few minutes with water hose inserted-take out hose and drain-do not let engine get hot-spray off front of radiator-reaatach hoser and top off at least 1 gallon antifreeze.

I have a 1996 DeVille with a coolant problem. I have replaced the air compressor, radiator, thermost at, serpentine belt. Car has run as hot as 255 and as low as 195 degrees. I am using up about 2 gallons...

Did you check the hoses to see if they are tight? The bottom of the radiator may have a leaking hose as well. Check the freeze plugs to see if they are leaking. Also check the cylinder heads for any leakage.

I have changed the thermostat and radiator but the car continues to run hot. 96 cadillac deville

Make sure that the A/C condenser in front of the radiator is unobstructed and that the fans are operating correctly.
I'm assuming that you have had the car tested for hydrocarbons in the radiator and that there is no steam coming from the tailpipe and you have no leaks? (head gaskets)
