Drain the oil out of your manual tranny into a CLEAN bucket. Run your fingers through it. Does it look like you've got splotches of silver paint? If so, your tranny's bearings and/or gears may be wearing out.

2010 ford focus automatic trsnsmission makes rubbing noise when accelerating from acomplete stop . noise continues until 2nd gear engages. from then on all is fine. reverse sometimes doesnt engage, ma

A carrier bearing usually pertains to the differential assembly and would not cause the symptom you describe. There is a problem with this transmission that causes it to not drop completely to first gear after a period of driving. Ford is aware of it but I do not believe they have initiated a recall. Call your Ford dealer(s) to see if you can find an honest man. Ask for the service manager.

My 95 Camry cant go into 5th gear. I was told that it was the clutch because it was making a grinding noise. I got the clutch fixed but even after that its not taking 5th gear and its still making the...

If the clutch is bad it would make the same noise in every gear, because the clutch does always the same engage and disengage the trans and its different gears. So if there is a noise in a specific gear the problem is the trans-axle ( if the noise is coming from the trans axle.)

My 1999 1.8 petrol vectra is making a whirring noise in the engine when its steady in 5th it stops

very difficult to advise without heariing the noise ,opel vectra (vauxhall) nice motors these ,if noise stops in 5th then it could be the gearbox like the layshaft needle bearings caused by low or no oil in the gearbox ,remember 5th gear doesnt use the layshaft its on the end of the mainshaft behind the cover next to the wheel arch

My cars makes a faint squealing/whislting noise when im cruising in 5th gear. the noise happens when i touch the gas and goes away when i let off

Why do I always have to be the barer of bad news. Mate that 5th gear of yours is worn, there is a large clearance (air gap) between the two gears that produces a whistle noise. This is not a serious problem but irritates the heck out of you. it is very easy to get to it you are a mechanic and you know what you are doing.
if you look from the drivers seat on your left is your engine and on your right is your trans mission, now the far right hand site of your transmission is a steel cap.
1.Before you undo the steel cap drain the gearbox oil.
2.Undo the steel cap
3. The first set of gears you see, that is the squealing little bugger number 5 undo the nuts and remove the two gears and take them to your dealer as sample. You must ask for both of them (one on the mainshaft and one on the lay shaft or it wont stop making a noise.
4.Replace the two gears and the noise will be something of the present

Unexplained squealing noise.

That usually means that the belt is loose. If it is loose it will make noise on start up and go away, but while running normal, if u make the pullys work more such as A/C, or something, you'll cause it to slip again, thus making it squeal and make noise. Another idea is if you only have one belt (a serp. belt) then if the tensioner, which is not adjustable by hand, is going bad could maybe cause this noise if the belt is slipping from not enough tension. An experienced tech would be able to tell if a tensioner is bad just by pulling on a belt and seeing what tension the belt has at the time. Hope this helps, good luck
