Question about 1990 Ford F150

1990 F150 xlt lariat, issues starting from solenoid

Have a 1990 F150 xlt lariat, They key turns all the way over and I have been starting it off the solenoid assuming i need an ignition switch (getting ready to pick one up). It has started with no problems like this until the past couple of days. I'll go to start it from the solenoid and it will just click and ill lose all battery power completely not even wanting to turn the engine over. It will periodically get battery power and repeat when i try to start it from solenoid again. The first day i just checked the battery cables and other connections, tapped on the starter with a hammer and eventually got it to crank fine and start right up ( no problems for the rest of the day). Second day all the same but it would start still so i hooked cables from the battery to the solenoid and got it running fine that way (continues to start no problem off solenoid all day. Just when it sits over night Im having problems. What could this be? Locked up starter? Bad solenoid? Loose connections?

Your questions almost summed up your problem. Based on what you've said, your problem sounds like a weak battery and/or a bad solenoid. The first thing I would do is put a full charge on the battery, then take it to an auto parts store and have it load tested. The next thing I would do is pull the starter and bench test it or have it tested. If you check it your self be sure to check the bendix for excessive wear. Given the age of your truck, your probably further ahead to just change the starter once you have it out. While you have the starter out it would be a good time to check the flywheel teeth for excessive wear too.

If you turn the key to acc, nothing happens, if you turn it to on, nothing happens, but if you turn it all the way to start, it does star but when the key springs back like normal, it turns the truck off....

did you replace the switch or did you replace the ingnition cylinder (cylinder is the part the key goes in)the switch is what controls the start acc and keeps the car or truck running
