If the catalytic converter is clogged, then yes.

Does a defective catalytic cause a car to run hot?

That could be the thermostat that is sticking. The catalytic converter has nothing to do with the temperature in the way that you are describing. Catalytic converters get very hot by themselves when they work correctly. If they are defective then they are either plugging up or losing their ability to convert. This would not cause the heat issue. The other thing that can cause catalytic converters to overheat is the engine running rich.

2 things come to mind. a plugged catalytic and the engine is running too rich and the convertor is trying to burn off the excess fuel.

I have a 99 chevy lumina 3.1 v-6 there is a censer behind the catalytic converter, check engine light stays on, car acceleration is sluggish as a strong odor.

The sensor is the oxygen sensor and it has a lifespan based on mileage and that is around 60,000 miles. If they go bad you have the driveability issues that you are talking about. But if the catalytic converter is bad too then it makes it worse.

Catalytic converter overheat

A rich fuel mixture will cause the catalytic converter to run hot. A plugged catalytic converter will cause the engine to run poor but not overheat normally

Can a bad catalytic converter cause the ignition coils to go bad

A bad catalytic converter can cause your vehicle to run rough and even seem to stall and hesitate around 40 to 50 miles per hour, this will feel like a ignition problem, the simplest way I found to check a cat is with a cheap infrared or temperature probe, check Amazon or Ebay, they are inexpensive enough, you don't need great accuracy , nothing expensive. The tempeture of the cat after the engine is hot will be approximately 30-40 degrees hotter on the output of the catalytic converter than the input, also the exhaust will have an odor of rotten eggs.

Does the catalytic converter has anything to do with the transmission

catalytic converter part is part of the exhaust system, torque converter part of transmission.if catalytic plugged car will only go 10 miles and hour, if you have torque converter problems car will stall out when you drive 30 miles and hour, when transmission goes in over drive, torque converter lock up.when you apply brakes torque converter suppose to unlock if not car will stall out when you come to a stop.

Can a catalytic converter cause your car to stall out, run sluggish up hills, misfire, and surge, cut in and out almost like you turn key off... Hello again everyone, I am back listing another question on...

It sure can. If the car can't breathe, it can't run. The backfiring can be caused by a pressure uncertainty. You did not hear this from me, but if you can run JUST the muffler, not the cat, AKA straightpiping, you will let your car breathe just a bit more. You might try this to see if it helps any at all. (I hope you do not live in Cali, as I suggest you not try this if you do.)
