Jeep immobiliser faults

My 1996 Jeep grand cherokee ltd is stopped from starting by the immobilser when the engine is cold. The red immobilser light goes off when the door is unlocked but there is no power to the injectors or spark plugs. After about five 3 second goes at starting the engine starts and runs normally. If stopped it will start again normally.

Hi,

You need to reset the alarm system, do the following:

1. Arm the system.
2.Disconnect the battery, and then reconnect it.
3.using the key ony, unlock the drivers door manually.

This will set the alarm off but it will also reset it.

Then once you have done this, close the bonnet and doors then press the lock button on the key.
Wait untill the alarm system has activated ( about 15 - 30 sec.) then using the button on the key unarm it.

This will reset the alarm and the vehicle should start straight away.

Hope this helps, let me know if you need more information.

Thanks

Jason

Thankyou for a much more thoughtfull answer

I have had a jeep mechanic use his scanner to read the controller
    There was no reported fault
He has restarted everything several times
    The problem stays the same

    Ok,

Then it can only be one of 3 things, the antenne in the key, door lock and ignition switch are not getting the switch off voltage to the VTSS module.

Or the VTSS modules timing of arming and disarming is malfunctioning within the module itself.

Unfortunately this wont get picked up by the fault code program, and therefore the DBR coder wont find it.

So get the Jeep guys to check the antenna signal from the above 3 things I mentioned, if the signal is good and the antennas check out then you will need to replace the VTSS module.

Unless Jeep know or have someone who is able to retime the module to the correct arming and disarming configuration.

The flashing light is signalling that the vehicle is disarming if you wait for a while will it switch off?

When you arm it does this take a while before it arms?

It should take 35 sec. to arm and 1.5 - 2.5 sec to disarm.

Hope you can get this solved soon, and I hope this has clarified a few things for you.

    Hi Jason
I went through your routine exactly on first startup this morning.
It did not fix the problem - it still took 20 seconds of spinning over to start.

    1. The door alarm is switched off/not functioning. - does that make a difference?
    2. The red light goes out in the 1 to 2 second time
    3. When I press the lock button on the remote the red light flashes quickly for about 15 seconds and then changes to slow flashes about every 3 seconds
Once the engine is "warm" the car starts and runs normally.

I am in Cairns where the temp got down to 20 deg C last night so "cold" is a relative term.

The oil pressure gauge is not working - I have had all the wires checked - does that indicate a problem
    Regards
    Graeme

    Hi Greame,

Yep that sounds like the VTSS module may have packed up, the lenght of time it is taking to start while the red LED is flashing is due to the alarm still in armed mode and then it is catching up. thats way you can start the vehicle after 20 - 30 seconds or so.

But if you have diactivated the door lock antenna this will have an effect on the alarm setting, you will need to get that repair or replaced and then try to reset it.

If after you have check all 3 anttena like I mentioned previously, it still wont operate correctly then get your Jeep mechanics to replace the VTSS module.

The hard starting is when the immobiliser is off and the red light is off
If the red light is on the engine will start but stop after 2 seconds as it is supposed to.

Immobilizers are tricky sometimes. If you have the fob type for instance, the connection has to be perfect at the fob for the car to start.

If stopped and started it runs normally, but this is kind of dicey of it waits 3 seconds before starting engine.

I wish you luck on this one.

May I ask what part of the question was misunderstood?

I read over your post again, and it seems that I mistated something. You try 5 times three seconds at a time. After that, it runs normally.

Engine Immobilser

I have a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee 6 cylinder. You might want to check the Ignition Off Draw (IOD) fuse in the Electrical Power Distribution center located in the black box located just in front of the coolant fill container on the left side under the hood. This is a 40 amp fuse, orange in color and is the orange fuse closest to the firewall. This fuse is used to put the jeep in storage if you don't plan to drive it for a while. Which would stop the current flow and not allow your battery to die. GOOD LUCK!
