SOURCE: im having a problem with
hi if you have checked the drve shafts which are driven when 4 wd is engaged ? as previous post suggested and you are sure the u j s are ok ? then may i suggest that if this clunking when only 4wd selected is a momentum constant with speed ? it may well be worth investigating the actual transfer drive for possible broken tooth on drive c/wheel or pinion? have you actually disconnected drive shaft and physically checked uj s? as one may be showing no wear/movement as suggested however it may be siezed on the needle rollers cups and not moving at angles when 4wd selected have had this happen on both drive/prop shafts and especially! on steering wheel shaft uj s and also giving stiff turning of steering wheel at a certain point also steering fails to self centralise straight so may i suggest you check em out as suggested above by removing before checking 4wd drivetransfer box hope this helps

remove the carpet on the floor, remove the gear shift lever as well as the 4wd shift lever, remove the drive shaft (both) remove the bell housing bolts, remove the starter, place a hydraulic lift jack below the gear box , then remove the wiring connectors , then remove the cross member , then pull the gearbox out from its positin, drop the gearbox very carefully, when gearbox is on the floor, make sure its sittin on a up right position so it dose not spoil any of the elctric connectors especially the reverse light switch...(that seems to be the easiest way to remove a manual land cruiser gearbox) hope that wil help....
