First pass, torque them to 30 Ft Lbs working from the center outward. Then go back again and torque them to 75 Ft Lbs.

You should really go to an auto parts place and buy a manual. This something you really should not cut corners. It will give you the specs and the sequence of how to torque the head. You will also need to know how to set the timing in relation to the cam and crank. Manual is well worth the money. It has pictures, instructions, and such.

install:

  1. The cylinder head should be cleaned and inspected prior to installation.
  2. Lightly oil all bolt and stud bolt threads before installation.
  3. Clean all gasket mating surfaces thoroughly.
  4. Install a new head gasket on the cylinder block. WARNING Always use new cylinder head bolts when installing the cylinder head or damage to the engine may occur.
  5. Install the cylinder head on the cylinder block.
  6. Tighten the cylinder head bolts in reverse of the removal sequence. Tighten the 2004 cylinder head bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm). Tighten an additional 70°, plus 70°, plus another 50°. Tighten 2005 bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm). Tighten an additional 60°, plus 60°, plus another 10°.
  7. Install the right engine mount. Tighten the engine mount attaching bolts to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
  8. Install or connect the following:
    • Intake manifold
    • Intake manifold support bracket. Tighten the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
    • Throttle cable
    • Surge tank coolant hose
    • Heater hose to cylinder head
    • Fuel feed line at the fuel rail
    • All vacuum hoses
    • Exhaust manifold
    • Rear timing belt cover
    • Timing belt tensioner. Tighten the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
    • Idler pulley. Tighten the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
    • Intake and exhaust camshaft gears. Tighten the bolts to 49 ft. lbs. (68 Nm).
  9. Apply a small amount of gasket sealant to the corners of the front camshaft caps and the top of the rear camshaft cover-to-cylinder head seal.
  10. Install the valve cover using a new gasket
  11. Align the timing marks on the camshaft gears.
  12. Align the mark on the crankshaft gear with the notch at the bottom of the rear timing belt cover.
  13. Install the timing belt and rotate the water pump clockwise to apply tension to the timing belt.
  14. Tighten the water pump bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  15. Adjust the timing belt tension.
  16. Install or connect the following:
    • Spark plug wires
    • Upper and lower timing belt coversCrankshaft pulley. Tighten the bolt to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm), plus an additional 30°, then another 15°.
    • Accessory drive belt
    • Air cleaner housing
    • Radiator hoses
    • Front splash shield
    • Right front wheel
    • Coolant temperature sensor
    • Fuel feed line from fuel rail
    • IAT sensor
    • Intake manifold pressure sensor
    • DIS coil connector
    • Fuel injector connectors
    • ECM ground terminal
    • Negative battery cable
  17. Fill the engine with oil and coolant.

if the 8th number om your VIN is a "J" then this is the correct prossess 3.1LTorque sequence --------- ' 6 2 3 7 ' ' 5 1 4 8 ' --------- Step 1: torque in sequence to 37 Ft/Lbs Step 2: turn an additional 90 degrees recheck final torque in sequence *** CAUTION ***engine uses Torque To Yield head bolts (TTY) thatpermanently stretch during the initial installation.New head bolts must be used when cylinder head isreplaced or re-installed to obtain proper torque.Always coat bolt threads with the proper sealant.

99 Honda civic 1.6 engine torque specs and sequences for cylinder head


Tighten the cylinder head bolts to their final torque specification in two steps. Use a crisscross sequence starting with the bolts at the middle of the head and working toward the outer bolts.
  1. Step 1: Tighten each bolt to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
  2. Step 2: Tighten each bolt to 61 ft. lbs. (85 Nm).

Need torque specifications for head gasket 1999 gmc sonoma


Hello beav_kimberl,

The torque is a four stage process:

1. First pass torque all bolt in the sequence shown below to 22 ft.lbs.
2. Tighten bolts 1,4,5,8 and 9 an additional 75 degrees.
3. Tighten bolts 12 an 13 an additional 65 degrees.
4. Tighten bolts 2,3,6,7,10 and 11 an additional 55 degrees.

Since you didn't say which engine you have, I've pulled torque specs for 3 different engines. Also, since I can't include a diagram showing the relative locations of the numbered head-bolt locations, it would be a good idea for you to purchase a vehicle specific repair guide that will show this info.


Take particular note about the TTY (Torque to Yield) bolts used on 2 of the 3 engines shown. It is said that new head bolts MUST BE USED when head is replaced or re-installed to obtain the proper torque.



B2500 4 Cylinder

Torque sequence: --------- ' 10 6 2 4 8 ' front ' ' ' 7 3 1 5 9 ' -----------Step 1: torque in sequence to 51 Ft/Lbs Step 2: torque again in sequence to 51 Ft/Lbs Step 3: final tighten all bolts an additional 90 to 100 degrees recheck final torque in sequence *** CAUTION ***engine uses Torque To Yield head bolts (TTY) that permanently stretch during the initial installation. New head bolts must be used when cylinder head is replaced or re-installed to obtain proper torque.

New head bolts must be used when cylinder head is replaced or re-installed to obtain proper torque.

TORQUE HEAD BOLTS TO * STEP 1 * TORQUE BOLTS 30 FT LBS * STEP TWO * TIGHTEN BOLTS 44 FT LBS STEP 3 TIGHTEN BOLTS PLUS 90 DEGREES.* STEP FOUR* TIGHTEN BOLTS PLUS 90 DEGREES AGAIN.
