First thing to do is find out if it's not getting fuel or not getting spark. If it only does it sometime, it is more likely no spark. That could be due to a bad cranks sensor. I would test the spark first. If it won't even turn over, then check the single wire that is attached to the solenoid and is for the ignition wire. Then double-check all your ground wires to make sure the cables aren't dirty or loose. Next check starter relay

Try tapping on the solenoid to see if it's stuck. Check and/or test power from ignition wire to starter. Test battery with voltmeter for 12-14 volts. Test starter relay with an ohmmeter.

If one of the battery cables is corroded or loose, the lights would work fine but not enough to crank it over. Do you get constant power from the ignition switch to solenoid each time it's cranked?

    yes

And that's about all there is. Just a little testing and checking.

could it be the neutral safety switch

    That is possible.
There is the computer, the neutral safety switch, fuse, ignition, relay, solenoid, starter and the cables.

97 Oldsmobile 88 after driving once motor is shut off will not crank until cool, had the control module tested it came back good, replace fuel pressure switch and still will not crank until cool?

You will need to replace the crank angle/position sensor near the crank pulley. A photo of the sensor is attached. The sensors wear out due to heat and cold cycles and internal corrosion.

Won't start sometimes

If the engine cranks over but it wont fire, it could be an ignition circuit problem, plugs, wires, ignition module and the like. Often, a tune-up or a little regular maintenance may help that.
If the engine doesn't crank over when you try to start it, it could be a poor performing starter solenoid-as they get older, the contact points inside the solenoid become worn and pitted, ending good electrical contact. In this case, a new starter solenoid is called for. Good luck.

Car won't start without being charged and when it sits overnight it wont start. makes a clicking noise when trying to start it

Battery is to weak & not holding charge. If the battery does not have enough power the starter will make a fast clicking sound or you will just hear one click.

I HAVE A 1992 NISSAN PATHFINDER AND I HAD A MECHANIC PUT IN A NEW STARTER AND IT STILL WON'T START WHEN IT GETS HOT. I HAVE TO WAIT TILL IT COOLS DOWN THEN SOMETIMES HAVE TO TAP THE STARTER. THE...

If he installed a new or remanufatured starter, I would suspect a weak battery possibly. If he installed a used starter, I would say the starter is bad. A hot engine is harder to crank than a cold engine and if the starter is marginal it will act the way you described. Try boosting your vehicle the next time it's hot, or get your battery load tested by a reputable shop that doesn't sell batteries. I have had experience with remanufactured starters that were no better than the unit I removed from the vehicle. Have him get a second reman and see if that doesn't solve the problem.

1985 corvette coupe very hard start

There is a series of two videos addressing a very similar problem with a 1989 Corvette, first one diagnosis, second one fix. Seems like this is a not unusual problem for these older Corvettes. Check out the links.

02 pontiac sunfire won't crank at random times

Hi, I had the same problem with my girlfriend's 97' sunfire, it wouldn't start so I jumped the starter terminals which I think screwed it up even more (causing the theftlock light to come on). It turns out this is a common problem that can be solved by hooking up a GM Tech2 scanner, going under "body" codes, and following the instructions for bypassing the PASS LOCK SOLENOID. Hope you find this helpful, Byron
