First of all get the fuel pressure checked. If the pressure of fuel is low from what is required then replacing the fuel pump and fuel filter will not help. You can get fuel pressure checked at any local car garage. This will confirm if the pressure is low due to any fuel leak or loose pump fitting. But if fuel pressure checked ok then the other possibility is the fault in fuel pump relay. It has to be checked. The fuel pump relay is located on the drivers side under the dash. It is the first one on the left in the bottom row.
Also get the fuel pump connections checked at fuel pump relay. It will show exact 12 some cases the relay is getting overheated and due to that it stops functioning and causes such problems.
Also check the fuel strainer. Fuel strainer (attached to the bottom of the fuel pump) .
The other possibility can be the fuel pump itself. In some cases Compatible pump does not works.Did you got original fuel pump and fuel filter replaced or compatible. If not then get OEM fuel pump and filter.

If the fuel pump you installed was not OEM original equipment manufacture, that is the problem. The fuel pressure it takes to run you vehicle depends on 60 psi fuel pressure constant. Inexpensive fuel pumps are that way for a reason, there are not as good and cannot hold pressure. Replace fuel pump with OEM fuel pump to repair problem. Also cheaper fuel pumps don't last half as long, even if they do run.
But if you have used original fuel pump and filter then ignore this last possibility.
Thanks. Keep updated for any more query. You can rate this solution and show your appreciation.

if the fuel pump is bad would it trip something other than the relay to shut off power to the pump. I bought two new relays.. when it shut off i switched the relay and it still did not have power to the pump. but if i wait half hour it does have power.

Lost power suddenly, idles but will not accellerate

Have your fuel pump and fuel filter replaced. If you let the truck sit off for 30 to 45 min; and then try to start it and drive, it should run again but only for a few minutes before losing power again. This is caused by the fuel pump overheating.

2003 gti vr6.I use the car but when after seat for 20-30 min Starts but sputters then turns off. If gas pedal is pumped to attempt to remain running, backfires

Sounds like you have the original fuel pump. Get a mulitimeter and with the key in the on position, check the fuel pump harness to make sure its getting 12 volts and do the same after 20 min. Also find a fuel pressure gauge that can read fuel injection pressure, and at first check the pressure its getting and then check again after about 20-30 min range. If the pressure is low than you need to replace the pump and strainer and probably throw in a new fuel filter while youre at it. If the voltage is low than its a wiring harness problem.

My 2000 VW Jetta won't stay running

not the fuel relay. the pump may not have enough psi to pump properly. and you ould have a blocked fuel filter/ ethanpl das has been none to clog lines, fuel pumps, and emissions.and injectors.

Change out your fuel filter first. Add a can of SEAFOAM to you fuel(parts stores). after changing filter. let SF sit in tank for 10-20 minutes in fuel. It will help dry the water that ethanol produces..,

If it turns over faster, and wants to start, that is a sign of EGS(ethanol gas syndrome)/ let it sit another 20 minutes and try to start. If it won't fire through the injectors, replace the regulator(which is also damaged), and that should fix it. Also have a psi done on your fuel pump. good luck

1997 VR6 Jetta won't start intermittently on hot days.

Just a thought , maybe change your fuel cap. may not be regulating tank pressure properly.
