This method is good for the firing order on all chevy small block v8 engines from 265 cubic inches to 400 cubic inches. This would include 265, 283, 305, 327, 350, 400 cu. in. chevy small block v8 engines.

Let's cover some safety concerns first. If you try to troubleshoot a mixed up firing order with the engine running, you could be in for a serious shock,.. literally. You can do it, with certain precautions, but you really don't need to check the firing order with the engine running. You definitely don't want to try checking the firing order if you are wearing any kind of pacemaker or sensitive electromechanical prosthesis. The voltage coming out of the ignition coil is in the thousands. Common sense dictates that you wouldn't stick a knife in an electrical outlet, so you wouldn't want to take chances with being shocked by the electrical discharge from your classic chevy's ignition coil either. See the diagram:

Firing order on a 305 on the cap. Got the wires - 5d6424a.png

The firing order, which should be cast into the intake manifold, for the chevy small block V8 is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2. The firing order is the numerical sequence in which the spark plugs are fired. The insertion position of each spark plug wire around the circumference of the distributor cap can be found according to a clock face. The insertion sequence determines the firing order. The firing order is followed clockwise around the distributor cap starting from the 6:30 position with the 6:30 position being the number one cylinder spark plug wire.

On classic chevy small block engines that use ignition breaker points instead of electronic ignitions, the number one cylinder is the one immediately clockwise of the small metal sash cover on the distributor cap. The firing order starts here. There is no sash cover on the distributor cap for GM HEI electronic ignitions, and the firing order is the same, but starting at the 5:30 position.
The firing order makes sense if you know how the cylinders are numbered. The number one cylinder is the front most on the drivers side and 2 being the front most on the passenger side. From front to back, the cylinders are odd numbered on the drivers side, and even numbered on the passenger side.

Additional details HERE.

Hope helps (remmeber rated this).

Number one is on the driver side,

1-3-5-7 on left,

2-4-6-8 on right and the answer is- 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 and the direction is clockwise this is for 305v8, the order should be on intake manifold, to find #1cylinder. remove distributor cap and number #1 plug, turn engine by hand, stick a straw or similar into #1cylinder, when piston is at very top this is #1, the rotor button should be pointing to #1 cylinder, or top dead center on scale.

New spark plugs new wires old distributor timing changed wen nee plugs were put on, clockwise or counterclockwise, don't know, besides the battery what firing order V8 305?

I don't know your year--make--model? You should be able to remove dist cap, crank the engine, watch which way the rotor turns, then you know the direction of rotation. Most chevy rwd v8, firing order, 18436572. The driver side bank is odd numbered, 1357.
The passenger side bank is even numbered, 2468 from front to back. Put your number one piston on tdc of compression stroke. Then whichever spark plug tower the rotor is leading into, should be number one, then you follow the firing order around the cap.

What is the firing order for a 1986 buick regal 305 engine

The firing order is the same, 18436572
But, depending on who made the engine, the firing order may go cw or ccw around the cap. You need to check which way the rotor turns when you crank it, then follow the firing order in that direction. Sometimes the number 1 spark plug tower is marked on the cap, if not, put the number one cylinder on top dead center of compression stroke, which ever coil tower the rotor is leading into is number one, then follow the firing order in correct direction of rotation. You driver side cylinder bank should be numbered, 1357 from front to back, passenger side 2468, front to back.
If you replace plugs and plug wires, one at a time, you won't have this problem. Goodluck.

Correct spark plug wiring diagram

Firing order for a 305 is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2. The distributor turns counter clockwise and #1 should be the 5 o'clock position looking down at the top of the distributor.

Keep in mind, the spark plug wires can be placed in any position (depending on the spark plug wire length) in relation to where the number 1 spark plug terminal is located. In other words, once you assign a port on the cap to number 1 cylinder the rest will follow the 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 firing order.

We've replaced the distributor cap and rotor in our 1985 Chevy C10 305 V8 and still have to fire TO the plugs. It won't start

This is a one piece distributor. It has the coil and pickup sensor all built in. Check and see if you have 12 volts on the large red wire that plugs into the cap while the key is on. (The other wire is for a tachometer if you have one). If you have power and there is no spark from your ignition wires, your pickup module is bad in the distributer. Very rarely have I seen a failed coil.

Firing order on 1996 gmc sierra 305

Firing order is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2. #1 usualy points to the #1 cylinder thats front driver side of engine On the cap. Remove the number 1 spark plug and have someone crank a little unitl you hear/feel air. The possition of the rotor is where your number 1 is, go Clockwise to place the wires in the correct order.

Have a good day ahead!
