Question about 1989 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

1 Answer

My chec engine light comes on after driving for a while, typically 20 miles or so on the freeway, a guy at checker said possibly something in the cat, and recommended sea foam, I know the alternator or the power steering is whining but wouldn't that cause the light to be on always? as soon as I turn the truck off and back on the light goes away.

Check engine like is it red or yellow? if it's yellow it could be a misfiring spark plug, or a lazy 02 sensor, that means you drive the truck till it gets in closed loop then the 02 sensor is connected to fuel trim and is not changing fast enough causing the light to come on. Since the 02 sensor is bypassed until engine is warm this could be your issue, it could also be a spark plug wire or even the heater on the 02 sensor, since it's a 89 it has a sensor on each side of the engine and one after the cat, if there is a spark plug problem if the check engine light starts flashing it means a catastrophic misfire that will destroy the cat so it is a fuel or spark problem.

PLEASE HELP!! Random Acceleration/ Car Dying/ Heat Gage Going Crazy??

The heat gauge is tweeking because the sealer is coating the sensor, that stuff is terrible, it cloggs your heater and rad. it could be the trottle positon sensor or the mass air flow sensor. i would start by changing the fuel filter, only $20 and this is probably your problem. not getting enough gas becauser its clogged and causing it to dye. accelerating because sometimes the fuel pump gets more pressure to push more gas through the clogged filter. I would bet $100 your problems will be gone after changing the filter, as for the cam sensor, that was a big waste of money. change the fuel filter and make sure the air filter looks good.

1999 Ford Contour engine light is on. Engine light came on for second time today. Reset this a few months ago and it seemed to be fine until today. The car seems to run fine at this time. Both times...

A possible culprit could be your O2 sensor (Oxygen sensor in the exhaust manifod or piping). These are usually good for about 80K to 100K miles. When they fail or start to deviate too far from their baseline readings they can cause the check engine light to come on. Driving on the highway at higher speeds would result in higher exhaust temperatures than typically are encountered during in- town driving so this could explain why it only occurs on at higher speeds (which equal higher engine loads of course). You could buy an engine code checker or take it to a shop and have them read the error codes for you to narrow it down and/or confirm my O2 sensor idea.

The check exhaust light came on during my drive home. Is it safe to drive it 20 miles to the nearest VW dealership? What might be the cause of this issue?

If your Check Engine light came on and your vehicle seems to run fine. You can drive your vehicle. if you have an AutoZone, Checkers or similar auto parts store closer, they perform FREE computer trouble codes retrieval.

Check engine light sensors have been reset but don't show a reading

U will need to drive a mixture of stop and go, city low speed and freeway miles, this can take a week and 20-50 miles or so for the system to finish it's internal self testing. this is called a drive cycle test.

2002 frontier v6 code 0455 evap leak large i put new fuel cap on anything else it might be

Of course it can be other issue's, but this code is most likely the fuel cap, erase the code and drive it until the systems goes through a complete drive cycle test, about 30 miles of varied driving, freeway, low speed and stop and go, if the light doesn't come back on u are home free.
