You have bought a pup by the sound of it ,the speedo is easy to repair just change the sender on the passenger side of the diff ,then i think the engine light will go out if it doesnt then check the vacumn pipes for a air leak ,other than that read the codes as it could be a lambada sensor but i think that on this vehicle it could be the speedo throwing the engine light on and i think the previous owner had someone clear the faults knowing that it woiuld come on again but it was sold and they had your money

is that suppose to be sensor?????? and the spedo wasn't working THEN the light came on. yes do believe they pulled the clear trick...... because we have come out of it w/ 4 codes has to do w/ emissions......not spedo or odom

you only asked about the speedo not working and an engine light coming on ,which i answered but i cannot read the codes for you from here ,also this vehicle here in europe doesnt have a OBDII connector ,not untill 2005 was it introduced here ,also you have a freedom of information act but a lot of vehicles use encrypted software here that can only be read by connecting to the internet then to the factory .So even the dealer cannot read a vehicle faults ,and if you lot learnt proper english like hood is bonnet and a trunk is a boot ,and pronounced tomatoe correctly we might understand one and other properly

After I bought my '96 850, I found it had the same problem. In my case the speedometer worked fine, but not the odometer. A little research on the internet revealed that it's a common problem with these models.

There's a motor that drives the odometer separately from the speedometer, and the weak link in the chain is a tiny gear that turns the odometer when the motor runs. That gear is easily broken and even one missing tooth will disable your odometer.

The fix is relatively straight-forward, but requires you to remove the instrument panel and disassemble it in order to get to the motor housing and the broken gear. You won't have any trouble finding replacement parts on eBay that are much better made and will last you the rest of the life of the car. The difficulty level on this is about medium, but be careful when you've got the instrument panel disassembled; I wasn't cautious enough and ended up with a couple of my indicators out of alignment; my tachometer read zero when it was idling, and my fuel gauge only went up to 17 gallons when it was full, so I had to take it all apart again to reposition the gauges to get them to read correctly.

My '91 Volvo odometer works occasionally it will be working for a short while and then sinks down to "0". I have been told it is a gear that needs to be replaced. I have been told to try...

The odometer usually is connected to one of your front wheels so you can try to take it out yourself and replace it the same way in reverse. You can ask the Volvo dealer where that might be at on your car.

The odometer reading disappeared on my '98 Volvo S70.

Have you found anything out. I brought my volvo in to have the battery replaced and when I picked it up I noticed the odometer was blank (no -----) just blank. I was told it was not related and probably just a bulb. Not a bulb I have no idea. I don't want to replace the cluster unless I'm sure what have you found out. (all my other gauges are fine speed, tach, trip fine)

Volvo 850 1996 4 door sedan Speedometer not working

Mark,

As long as you have the instructions to replace the speeometer drive gear go ahead, and do it.

One BIG question I have for you....how do you know that the mileage is not way over what you've been told?...

small tip for the future.......if you ever look at another car for anybody, and the speedometer doesn't work...pass up the car..there is always another one down the road waiting for you.

Hopefully this will help you, and thanks for letting us at FixYa.com help out...happy New Year

Speedometer and odometer not working 92 audi 100

I had similar problems with speedos in two 1990 Audi 100s, it was some time ago, but the contacts on the circuit boards on the back of the speedo deteriorate and do not give a good contact. I bought second hand speedos, only to find they had similar problems, eventually it was very easy to fix, I shaved matchsticks to chisel points and pushed them into the circuit boards to add pressure on the contacts and improve connection. After that repair drove the cars for a few years and the problem did not recur. It was a long time ago and I cannot remember exactly where the matchsticks were placed but look for soldered points near the edges of the boards. Regards, Michael

Odometer quit working

Odometer is turned by a mechanical gear wheel, which is the likely culprit.
