Question about 2001 Volvo S60

1 Answer

I am receiving an "Emissions System Service Requirement" message. The car runs fine and there seems to be no issue starting, stooping, driving, or in any other manner. What does the message mean and what should I do? Thanks. Dan

HI. This alert is in reference to your EVAP System.

This indicates that a part of the EVAP control system is no longer functioning correctly. The EVAP system consists of many parts, including the gas cap, fuel lines, carbon canister, purge valve, and other hoses. The (EVAP) emission control system prevents the escape of fuel vapors from a vehicle's fuel system. Fuel vapors are routed by hoses to a charcoal canister for storage. Later, when the engine is running a purge control valve opens allowing intake vacuum to siphon the fuel vapors into the engine. EVAP emission canister purge is controlled by a valve which allows engine vacuum to pull stored fuel vapors from fuel tank into the engine to be burned, rather than be vented into the environment. A vacuum switch is used to detect when flow exists. If the PCM/ECM commands purge and detects that the switch is closed, the "Emissions System Service Requirement" message will be issued.

The necessary actions are to have a diagnostic scan ran on this vehicle, asap. The scan will pull a code(s), which will indicate the actual problem and the location of the failed part or component. The most likely causes for this code will be a bad vacuum switch, broken EVAP line or canister, Restricted EVAP solionoid or canister, failed purge valve(likely cuprit) or a failed PCM. A bad purge vale connector could also cuase a mis-reading, as well.

    • It is perfectly normal for your vehicle to run normally with this type of fault present.

SERVICE ENGINE SOON Indicator
The SERVICE ENGINE SOON indicator receives its signal from the PCM over the SCP network. If the instrument cluster does not receive a message from the PCM within 5 seconds, the instrument cluster illuminates the SERVICE ENGINE SOON indicator and log a diagnostic trouble code (DTC).
The blub is probably burnt out , pull the instrument cluster an replace the blub .

Service vehicle soon like comes on after 25 minutes of running then it locks out my radio and causes the security light to also come on. I've had it on 3 different scopes & was told the codes were

I don't know who told you that , a semi- clogged catalytic will cause a low power issue an maybe a couple of DTC'S diagnostic trouble codes P0420 - P0430 ,Has nothing to do with the alarm system ! Do you mean Service vehicle soon or SERVICE ENGINE SOON ?
SERVICE VEHICLE SOON
The IPC illuminates the SERVICE VEHICLE SOON indicator in the message center when the PCM or the BCM detects certain non-emissions related malfunctions. The IPC receives a class 2 message from the PCM or from the BCM requesting illumination. What problem are you having with alarm system ? If you have a starting issue it's the Anti-Theft system not alarm system . The alarm would go off if you vehicle was broke into . I don't know what shop you took it to but did you try a dealer ?

Honda's have an Intermittent DISTRIBUTOR ISSUE that you would need to have replaced. Ford and Chevrolet BOTH have Ignition Module problems and replacing it fixes the issue., ALL cars have Requirement for FUEL PRESSURE. If there is a Blockage of Fuel then it will die and then in less than a minute, you can start the car. This is common Fuel Filter Blockage issue., WHAT is the YEAR/MAKE/MODEL and ENGINE for your car?

Po172 refers to an oxygen sensor. But after you service the part you need to clear the code with an OBD II scanner. You can get a reliable inexpensive one at Harbor Freight. After you clear the code then you to start the car and drive it to see if the code comes back on. Also if you have a vacuum leak this can cause the system to run either rich or lean depending on circumstances.

Is there any kind of check engine light on, or emissions light on? Sometimes when the ignition coils heat up they will short out and stop working, and after they cool down they will work again only till they heat up, then they will stop. If this doesn't help i would need more information to better diagnose whats wrong. Thanks, good luck, Bob

Just filled up with gas and service engine light came on and code is 430 and still seems to run fine but it seems like it has ben using alot of gas

I think that code is an emissions code. IF you had the truck running while you were filling up it can cause the DTC/ check engine light to come on. I would have the code erased (autozone can do it for free) and see if it occurs again. IF it comes back on then it would be a good idea to have the system looked at.

Whats included in a 120k maintance

This almost always if different depending on the shop you take you car to. The best way is to look in your owners manual, pick your diving conditions, normal or extended use, and see what Mistubishi recommends. Should be at least, oil change, rotate, brake inspection, air filter, spark plugs, plug wire set, timing belt. On a Mits with over 100k miles I always recommended Distbutor cap and rotor, Transmission flush(for auto), Induction flush.
