The EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) valve

What is it? This is a device that reduces engine emissions of nitric oxides by allowing a measured amount of exhaust gas to re-enter the intake manifold and mix with the air prior to entering the cylinders. The EGR can be vacuum or electrically driven or a combination of both.

Where is it located? The EGR is most often associated with the intake manifold. The EGR will be sited at a point of contact with both the exhaust and intake manifolds. If the exhaust manifold is remote, for example on the other side of the engine to the intake manifold, there will often be an exhaust feed pipe leading from the exhaust manifold to the EGR sited on the intake manifold.

How does it work? Generally intake manifold vacuum acting on a diaphragm draws up on a valve to open a connection between an entry port from the exhaust gases and an exit port to the intake manifold. An open EGR port makes starting difficult so the valve operation is often impeded by an electrical over-ride until the engine has warmed up, as signaled to the ECU by the coolant temperature sender. In some cases, a differential pressure feedback exhaust (DPFE) sensor fed by pipes from the exhaust feed to the EGR informs the ECU when and by how much the EGR should be open.

Symptoms of faulty EGR

The EGR has two possible fault modes either it is a) open when it should be closed or b) closed when it should be open. (some EGR faults are in fact more likely to be DPFE related)

  • Poor idling: ‘hunts’ at idle and generally rough engine performance. This is due to the air ingress through the split diaphragm or the EGR valve being left open, either event compromises the intake manifold vacuum and in turn this interferes with the ECU’s ability to deliver accurate fuel to air ratio for a given engine speed.
  • Misfire and ‘pinking’: if the EGR is jammed closed or the exhaust feed pipe is blocked (e.g. gummed up with baked carbon) the engine ignition runs lean and very hot, so hot in fact that the fuel air mix can spontaneously ignite causing a misfire. The misfire if pronounced can, in turn, be detected by the engine knock sensors and this gives the appropriate on board diagnostic error codes along with the check engine light. Due to the diesel engines creating more soot in the exhaust a blocked EGR is a much more common complaint in diesels than petrol cars.
  • Surging: A sticking EGR valve can lead to an effect of rhythmic surging a bit like the MAF fault, especially in turbo charged engines. Normally on a warmed up engine the vacuum from the inlet manifold opens the EGR. If the EGR fails to open promptly the turbo can be subject to a slight boost. Extra fuel/air mix is pushed into the inlet manifold as a result, increasing pressure (decreasing the vacuum). Without vacuum in the inlet manifold the EGR closes again but if sticky does so only slowly. This may allow inlet gases to flow through the EGR into the exhaust manifold for a split second. There is a time lag in the sequence of these events leading the engine to surge in cyclical manner.


How to check? With the engine running it may be possible to force the EGR valve open by pressing on the diaphragm with one’s fingers. Failing that pulling off the vacuum line to the EGR, blocking the pipe on the inlet manifold and applying vacuum to the EGR to monitor function will determine if the diaphragm is split. Removal of the EGR assembly and examination of the ports and valve mechanism will reveal any carbon build up.

How to fix? If the diaphragm is split then the EGR needs to be replaced. Most EGR problems are linked to carbon soot build up and this can be cleaned using a cloth, brush and carburetor choke cleaner spray. If the exhaust feeder pipe is blocked this can be cleaned using a piece of frayed hand brake cable as an internal brush. This makeshift brush can be further enhanced by mounting it in a drill to sweep dirt from the interior of lengths of pipe. Some cars (Hondas are a good example) have an elaborate passage way system to provide exhaust gas to each inlet pipe runner. The only way to clean these out is by removing the blanking plugs (no easy task) and then using the makeshift rotary wire brush and carburetor choke spray. New blanking plugs have to be reinstated to make good the passage ways assembly.

SOURCE: EGR VALVE ON 96 FORD PROBE SE

If it's a 2.0L, 5 speed (1994-7) there are two DPFE solenoids (both w/ 3 vacuum ports) near the oil filter, which control the EGR valve. They are discontinued and impossible to find except on junked cars. (FORD #'s K5T44093-4)
I have to junk my 1996 Probe if I don't find them - Missouri emissions.

P0400 - Exhaust Gas Recirculation Flow Malfunction
The exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve is vacuum controlled valve that regulates the amount of exhaust gases that re-enter the cylinders. The powertrain control module (PCM) determines how much based on engine load, temp, and other conditions. If the PCM detects that the amount of exhaust gases entering the cylinder were insufficient or non-existent, this code is set.

Symptoms: No symptoms will likely be noticed by the driver other than the MIL (malfunction indicator lamp). However, non visible symptoms will be increased combustion temperature and increased Nox emissions.

Causes: A code P0400 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:
Plugged EGR passage which restricts the flow of exhaust gasses
Faulty EGR solenoid
Faulty EGR solenoid wiring/harness
Vacuum lines damaged/disconnected to the EGR valve solenoid or to the EGR valve
Faulty EGR valve

Possible Solutions: Since EGR valve designs are different, no one test will suffice:
Using a scan tool, operate the EGR valve with the engine running. If the engine stumbles, the problem was likely intermittent wiring problem or intermittent blockage problem
If engine doesn't stumble, operate the EGR valve manually, if possible. If engine doesn't stumble and die, the ports are likely plugged. Removal of valve and cleaning of all ports will be required
Checking of solenoid can only usually be done with a scan tool, because most solenoids operate with a duty cycle of voltage, rather than constant voltage
Check all vacuum lines, hoses, etc for any damage
Visually inspect the solenoid harness and the solenoid for damage
Replace EGR valve

If the EGR valve is electrically operated, check for its wiring connector to be connected and test the wiring for opens or shorts. If the wiring checks out, the EGR valve may be faulty.

If the EGR valve is vacuum operated, check that the vacuum diaphragm of the valve is intact and not leaking. If the diaphragm won't hold a vacuum, replace the EGR valve.

I have a 2005 Dodge Dakota V8 4x4 My check engine light turned on. I took the truck to Autozone to have them hook up the machine and see what the problem was. It said I have a bad EGR Valve. I havent...


It can affect mileage, but it might not be the valve. EGR systems tends to get clogged by gunk. Take the valve off and see how dirty things are. If the system is clogged up, take apart as much as you can to clean it up. You can test the valve for operation with a good scanner (autozone doesn't do this--they just tell you the code). Here are instructions from autozone.com:

Linear EGR Valve Diagnosis
The linear EGR valve diagnosis procedure varies depending on the vehicle make and model year. Always follow the recommended procedure in the vehicle manufacturer's service manual. The scan tester may be used to diagnosis a linear EGR valve. The engine should be at normal operating temperature prior to EGR valve diagnosis. Since the linear EGR valve has an EVP sensor, the actual pintle position may be checked on the scan tester. The pintle position should not exceed 3% at idle speed. The scan tester may be operated to command a specific pintle position, such as 75%, and this commanded position should be achieved within two seconds. With the engine idling, select various pintle positions and check the actual pintle position. The pintle position should always be within 10% of the commanded position. When the linear EGR valve does not operate properly:
  • Check the fuse in the 12 V supply wire to the EGR valve.
  • Check for open circuits, grounds, and shorts in the wires connected from the EGR valve winding to the PCM.
  • Use a digital voltmeter to check for 5 v on the reference wire to the evp sensor.
  • Check for excessive resistance in the EVP sensor ground wire.
  • Leave the wiring harness connected to the valve, and remove the valve. Connect a digital voltmeter from the pintle position wire at the EGR valve to ground, and manually push the pintle upward. The voltmeter reading should change from approximately 1 V to 4.5 V.

If the EGR valve did not operate properly on the scan tester and tests 1 through 5 are satisfactory, replace the valve.

HOW TO INSPECT EGR VALVE

Before attempting to troubleshoot or repair a suspected exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system on a vehicle, the following conditions should be checked and be within specifications.
  • Engine is mechanically sound.
  • Injection system is operating properly.
  • Mechanical-vacuum advance is properly adjusted or the electronic advance system is operating properly.
If one or more of these conditions is faulty or operating incorrectly, perform the necessary tests and services to correct the problem before servicing the EGR system.

Before attempting any tests of the EGR system, visually inspect the condition of all vacuum hoses for kinks, bends, cracks, and flexibility. Replace defective hoses as required. Check vacuum hose routing. (See the underhood decal or the manufacturer's service manual for correct routing.) Correct any misrouted hoses. If the emissions system if fitted with an exhaust-gas-recirculation valve position (EVP) sensor, the wires routed to it should also be checked.
If the EGR valve remains open at idle and low engine speed, the idle operation is rough and surging occurs at low speeds. When this problem is present, the engine may hesitate on low-speed acceleration or stall after deceleration or after a cold start. If the EGR valve does not open, engine detonation occurs. When a defect occurs in the EGR system, a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is usually set in the powertrain control module (PCM) memory.
