If you want to install an aftermarket starter relay, get the one with the 4 wires.

After the neutral safety switch or clutch switch (if manual transmission), cut the wire (going to the starter selenoid) and tape the end coming from the switch to the supply and positive wires in the relay, then tape the end of the wire going to the starter selenoid to the load side of the relay (supply and load wires are the thick ones), last, fasten the relays negative wire to a good chasis ground. This way, the relay will be operative and it will not interfere with the safety devices installed.

Click on the following link for a wiring diagram of the starting system, this will give you a better picture of what I am talking about.

Good Luck!!

Just to make sure, apply 12v (+) from the battery to lead 1 and (-) to lead 2, you should hear a click inside the relay. If this is true, proceed as follows:

Tape leads 1, 3 and wire coming from the switch together, lead 4 goes to the starter selenoid and lead 2 goes to chassis ground.

Ok, when I talk about the switch, is because I don't know if your vehicleis has manual transmission or automatic transmission, the first one uses clutch switch and the second uses neutral safety switch.

Let's say for example that your vehicle has automatic trannny, you would use the wire coming out of the neutral safety switch located on top of the tranny, driver's side. if you want to know wich is the wire coming from this switch and which one goes into, use a test light or voltmeter, one side touching a good ground and the other touching one of the wires,

If the transmission is in Park or Neutral, both wires should have 12v when you crank up the vehicle. (you need sombody to crank it up while you perform the test.

Now, set transmission on R or D and turn key to RUN like if you were to crank it up, you should not have response from the starter, chech both wires, ONLY one wire is going to have 12v. The wire you need is the one WITHOUT 12v.

Cut this wire about 4 inches from the plug and install the relay.

Just checking if you figure it out!! The Relay terminals are numbered, if you look close, they have a small number next to each one, Another tip, terminals 1 & 2 are usually thinner gauge than the 3 & 4.

I have only been a free contributor to this site for the past 4-months.

I do not know if you still need this information, but I am going ahead and answering it anyway.

I'm not sure if you have the 2000 Dodge 1500 with the 3.9L (6-Cyl), 5.2L (8-Cyl), and 5.9L (8-Cyl) Engine; however I have included.

For the 3.9L (6-Cyl):
Firing Order:
(back of engine)
(front of engine)

For the 5.2L AND 5.9L:
Firing Order:
(back of engine)
(front of engine)

Again my apologies...

97 isuzu trooper. Starter motor has no power.

Check the battery and cables going to the starter. Weak arc? Possible that the relay needs to be rechecked now. The inertia switch may also be a possibility. Has the car been in a recent fender bender?

Starter Replacement 1995 4wd, 6 cyl Pickup

Very difficult, apparently 4wd makes it even harder
you need to drop part to the front suspension to get it out

i attempted to do it myself but couldn't and just ended up having it towed in for servicing, im not sure how savvy you are but its a pretty big job (took 3 hours for the shop to do)

so i would probably suggest just taking it in,
also Nissan rebuilt starters are known to have problems
