Three things will make an a/c compr, cut on and off. 1 lower freon, will we know thats not the case. 2 possible low pressure switch, sit on accumulator, starting to go bad, and 3 most's likely high pressure, will need a/c gauges, if very high pressure a/c compr will shut off, could be resticted orfic tube, or condenser fan at radiator not coming on, fan has to be on when a/c is on, or system will have high pressure.

2004 matrix ac inop

Most of the Toyotas in your year range have an updated AC relay. If the system is full of freon, the pressure switches are operable, try replacing the relay.

If the system is low of freon, it won't allow the compressor to start up.

There is an easy way to check the compressor clutch, but I can't explain it unless you understand how a relay works and which pins to connect in the relay box.

2000 Avalon XLS air condition keeps cutting off

Could be low on freon or a relay / switch problem.
Could also be a problem with the ac clutch on the compressor.
You can check the freon charge first, or check the clutch for voltage when the system cuts off.

AC not running in my 1998 Jeep Cherokee. Changed AC clutch compressor RELAY, freon level is good, temperature sending unit replaced along with cooling fan! Checked all fuses still good. Can't seem to...

Hello, You have two switches which work off the pressure of the Freon. Both of these switches cut off the power to the compressor. One is for HIGH pressure and the other is for LOW pressure. Check for power at the compressor clutch connector harness while the controls are set and the engine is running. You may have power and a bad clutch.

When you say that the Freon pressure is good, does that mean the pressure is within the proper range? Too much Freon will make the HIGH switch cut off power and too little will make the LOW pressure switch cut off power.

The ideal amount(ozs) of Freon is what is recommended by the Manufactuer and it will provide a moderate amount of pressure of about 35psi-40psi. You can borrow pressure gauges, called Manifold gauges to measure your system at autoparts stores with loaner programs.

The low pressure side of the system is the one you use to induce the Freon to go into an empty system. You can bypass this switch by taking off the connector and putting a "U" shaped jumper into the harness and the compressor clutch should get power to LOCK up all of the time.

You can take off the switch connector at the compressor clutch and then check for power when bypassing the HIGH pressure switch if the LOW pressure switch does not make the system get power. Only, really only bypass the HIGH pressure switch with the clutch connector disconnected. The HIGH switch is there to prevent damage to all of the components from seals to lines to every piece of Freon hardware in the car. Bypassing with the A/C clutch disconnected will allow you to know if power is getting to the compressor clutch.

Finally, you can get FREE wiring and fusebox diagrams through Autozone.com. Just sign and register to their site and then you can print the documents for yourself.

Good luck with this repair and I hope my solution helps you.

My a/c compressor is only blowing hot air when I turn it on. I know a little about cars so I know it's the a/c but I am not able to find one on any site that may sell used or new.

If all you get is hot air there are several possibilities. The compressor is driven by the serpentine belt and is engaged and disengaged by an electric clutch mounted on the compressor drive pulley. With the engine running, have an assistant turn on the AC while you observe the AC compressor clutch. If the clutch engages, you can be reasonably sure that the system has freon, and the electric circuit is OK. If the clutch doesn't engage, which is the most likely situation, either you are low on freon, the AC clutch relay is inop, or AC compressor fuse is open (blown). A search of Google images will give you the location of the AC relay. You can pull out the relay, carefully remove the cover, reinsert the relay, and engage the compressor clutch by manually closing the relay contacts. Warning: do this only for a second or two in order to see the clutch engage. If the clutch does engage, then you are probably low on freon. There is a safety switch that prevents the clutch from operating if there is not enough freon in the system. Hopefully, this is the case. Go to Walmart and get two cans of r-134 and the inexpensive kit, and following their instructions, charge your system. If this is not the problem, you'll need a set of AC gauges and the skill to use them. Hope this helps. Dano

We have a 2000 3.0L caravan that we recently bought. The ac belt was off the compressor, so I put that on. The clutch would not engage. So reading online, I decided to bypass my Ac Clutch Relay. When...

i think you need a new compressor which is why the belt was left off ,also the gas is the main lubricant for the compressor as well so running it with no gas hasnt helped either ,best of british with it anyway

I have a 1998 chevy cavalier, I was driing and the AC was working. I stopped and when I started teh car again a couple hours latter the AC was not working. The fuses are good and the comressor and dryer...

Did you check the AC relay? Usually located under the hood, try swapping it with another relay with the same part number that isn't required to run the vehicle. If the AC now works, then replace the relay. If not , then verify compressor operation. With the engine running, watch the compressor clutch while someone else turns on the AC control. The clutch should engage and begin to run. If not, then find the pressure cycling switch usually located on the accumulator. Disconnect the harness and jumper the contacts. With the engine off and the key turned on , turn the AC control on. You should now be able to watch the clutch engage and disengage by removing and replacing the jumper lead. If it does, then replace the switch. I hope this information is helpful. Thanks for trying Fixya.

A/c has full freon but the compressor clutch wont engage. i have found that the plug going into the compressor is not getting any power. what could be the problem?

On the low pressure line of the ac you have a pressure switch which allows the compressor to come on once a certain pressure is reached, and it will cut the compressor off if the pressure is too high or too low. Look at your ac hose and find the switch *you will see wires connected to it* you may need to replace this switch. You can use a test light to see if you are getting power to the switch. You should check you fuses, and the ac relay witch is usually in a black plastic box under the hood.

The compressor will not come on tried relay fuses still not coming on did ac service with machine so it is full of freon no fire to the compressor tried jumping relay still no fire

did you check the ohms to the AC winding behind the pulley? Check the gap on the clutch as well. It should be very very close but not touching like 3 or 4 sheets of paper close. If that coil burns out it would produce the exact symptoms you describe.
you will need to make sure the ground circuit on that also works.

Ac compressor will not engage when ac is on. System seems to be full of gas. Quit without warning. This is on a 2003 Nissan Altima with 2.5L. Secondary fan does come on when AC is switched on.

Check A/C compressor relay. When you say it seems to be full of gas(freon) have you actually put a pressure gauge on the system? If the pressure is too low, the compressor will not engage. If the compressor relay is functioning, check for power at the compressor clutch. If it has power to it and it still is not engaging, the A/C clutch may need replacing. It is usually almost as economical to replace the complete compressor with clutch installed than to just purchase a clutch. Keep in mind if you replace the compressor you should also replace the receiver/dryer also referred to as the accumulator.

Compressor not cycling on and off

unless the compresor is on u cant get a good eye on if ther is enough freon but still should cycle on and off/if it has a low side cut out switch (scews in the large line with two wires)that can be checked by bypassing the switch/but mind u it could still have a problem with ac system/and if the ac works when bypassed(very short run time)then replace switch with new one right away, also look for ac clutch relay and check or replace
