Front bearing wheel nut holding axle on? 115 foot pounds and hammer in or crimp the nut after tightening. ^ like shape into slot of axle this locks the axle. for the wheel bearing for rear wheel drive the nut should be tightened by hand till tight 15 foot pounds then backed off 1/4 turn, be sure there is plenty of grees in the bearing cup before tighting nut be sure to line up slot for key with rotor on the rotor should turn free and should not have any slop in it, put the wheel on it and put the nuts on and try wiggleing the wheel back and forth if any movement readuast nut. If it is to tight it will over heat outter wheel bearing, also be sure there is greese in inner wheel bearing.

That's not the way it works. you buy a socket set. It has one set of AF Sockets and one set of Metric sockets. The one you use is the one that fits.

Procedure for replacing rear whl brgs on a 2003 escape awd

4-Wheel Drive
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Negative battery cable
    • Rear wheel
    • Rear brake shoes
    • Rear halfshaft nut and loosen the halfshaft from the hub
    • Wheel hub and place it in a vise
    • Inner wheel bearing race from the hub
    • Antilock Brake System (ABS) sensor bracket and move the sensor aside, if equipped
    • Parking brake cable from the steering knuckle
    • Brake line from the wheel cylinder and support the knuckle
    • Lower shock absorber nut
    • Lower ball joint by holding the ball joint stud
    • Upper ball joint
    • Coil spring while noting the location of the insulator
    • Steering knuckle cam
    • Steering knuckle
    • Snapring and press out the outer wheel bearing race from the knuckle

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:
    • New wheel bearing into the steering knuckle
    • Snapring to the knuckle
    • Wheel hub
    • Steering knuckle cam and hand tighten the bolt
    • Coil spring
    • Shock absorber lower nut. Torque the nut to 85 ft. lbs. (115 Nm) for 2002-04 models; 129 ft. lbs. (175 Nm).
    • Upper ball joint. Torque the nut to 76 ft. lbs. (103 Nm).
    • Lower ball joint. Torque the nut to 76 ft. lbs. (103 Nm). Align the steering knuckle cam and torque the bolt to 85 ft. lbs. (115 Nm).
    • Brake line to the wheel cylinder. Torque the brake line bracket bolt to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm) and the brake line fastener to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm).
    • Parking brake cable to the backing plate. Torque the bolt to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).
    • ABS sensor bracket. Torque the bolt to 80 inch lbs. (9 Nm), if equipped
    • Halfshaft nut. Torque the nut to 214 ft. lbs. (290 Nm).
    • Brake shoes
    • Rear wheel
    • Negative battery cable
  2. Fill and bleed the brake system.
  3. Check and adjust the wheel alignment as needed.

2-Wheel Drive
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Negative battery cable
    • Rear wheel
    • Rear brake drum
    • Wheel hub nut
    • Wheel hub
    • Inner wheel bearing race from the hub
    • Snapring
    • Wheel bearing outer race from the knuckle

Install or connect the following:

  • Wheel bearing in to the knuckle
  • Snapring
  • Wheel hub into the wheel bearing
  • Wheel hub nut. Torque the nut to 214 ft. lbs. (290 Nm).

How does one tighten up front wheel bearings

There are several different methods depending on what type of vehicle you are working on. For example : A front wheel drive car will require knowing the torque specification and tightening the retaining nut to that spec. on most rear wheel drive vehicles you tighten the retaining nut untill there is no play in the bearing and then back off 1/4 turn to the first locking hole in the spindle and install the cottter pin to lock the nut in place. REMOVAL OF FRONT WHEEL BEARINGS

Front (4 Wheel Drive) To Remove:
  1. Raise and support the vehicle
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Tire and wheel assembly
    • Rotor (See: Disc Brake Rotor)
    • Wheel speed sensor and brake hose mounting bracket bolt from the steering knuckle
    • Electrical connection for the wheel speed sensor
    • Front drive halfshaft assembly (See: Halfshaft)
    • Hub and bearing assembly mounting bolts 4WD front hub 9308kg35.gif

    • Hub and bearing assembly
To Install:
  1. Clean all corrosion or contaminates from the steering knuckle bore and the hub and bearing assembly
  2. Lubricate the steering knuckle bore with wheel bearing grease or the equivalent
  3. Install or connect the following:
    • Hub and bearing assembly
    • Hub and bearing assembly mounting bolts and tighten the hub to knuckle bolts; Torque to: 133 ft. lbs. (180 Nm)
    • Front drive halfshaft assembly (See: Halfshaft)
    • Electrical connection for the wheel speed sensor
    • Wheel speed sensor and brake hose mounting bracket bolt to the steering knuckle and tighten the bolt; Torque to: 106 inch. lbs. (12 Nm)
    • Rotor (See: Disc Brake Rotor
    • Tire and wheel assembly

drum brakes you remove rear wheel- speed sensor-grease cap-flange nut-outer bearing-brake drum-inner grease seal-inner bearing-drive the bearing races out of the drum hub.to install -install the inner and outer bearing races.apply grease to the bearings and hub cavity.then you install the inner bearing -inner grease seal-brake drum-outer bearing-flange nut torque it to 159 to 192 ft lbs. THE REAR DISC BRAKE WHEEL BEARINGS-you have to remove rear wheel -wheel speed sensor-brake caliper and rotor-rear axle hub bolts-tone the wheel with tool 09445-21000-carrier assembly-nut after unstaking it-press out the rear axle hub-remove the bearing inner race with tool 09445-21000-remove the bushings from the carrier with tools 09453-33000b and 09545-21100.to install -press in the bushings to the carrier with tools 09453-33000b and 09545-21100- press in the bearings to the hub with tool 09221-21000.tighten the flange nut to meet the concave portion of the spindle-press in the tone wheel with tool 09221-21000-torque the nut to 191 ft lbs -install the hub and bearing assembly to the backing plate and torque the bolts to 88 ft lbs-install the brake caliper and rotor.install the wheel speed sensor if equipped.install the rear wheel.TO BUY THE TOOLS TO DO THE JOB.LOOK UP KENT MOORE TOOLS ON INTERNET.

  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  1. Remove the rear wheel and tire assemblies.

Remove the rear brake caliper and support bracket from the knuckle as an assembly. Wire the caliper and support bracket assembly out of the way.
  2. s3b%7eus%7een%7efile=ani_caut.gif%7egen%7eref.gif CAUTION: Index-mark the driveshaft flange and pinion flange (4851) to maintain initial balance during installation. s3b%7eus%7een%7efile=ani_caut.gif%7egen%7eref.gif CAUTION: The driveshaft centering socket yoke fits tightly on the pinion flange pilot. Never hammer on the driveshaft or any of its components to disconnect the yoke from the flange. Pry only in the area shown, with a suitable tool, to disconnect the yoke from the flange. Disconnect and position the driveshaft out of the way.
  1. Install an Nm (inch/pound) torque wrench on the nut and record the torque necessary to maintain rotation of the drive pinion gear through several revolutions.
  1. s3b%7eus%7een%7efile=ani_caut.gif%7egen%7eref.gif CAUTION: After removing the nut, discard it. Use a new nut for installation. Use the special tool to hold the pinion flange while removing the nut.
  1. Index-mark the pinion flange and drive pinion gear stem to maintain initial balance during installation.
  1. Using the special tool, remove the pinion flange.
Installation
  1. Inspect the pinion flange seal journal for rust, nicks, and scratches prior to installing the flange. Polish the seal journal with fine crocus cloth, if necessary.
  1. Lubricate the pinion flange splines.
    • Use SAE 80W-90 Premium Rear Axle Lubricant XY-80W90-QL or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSP-M2C197-A.
  1. NOTE: Disregard the index marks if installing a new pinion flange. Position the pinion flange.
  1. Using the special tools, install the pinion flange.
  1. s3b%7eus%7een%7efile=ani_caut.gif%7egen%7eref.gif CAUTION: Do not under any circumstance loosen the nut to reduce preload. If it is necessary to reduce preload, install a new collapsible spacer (4662) and nut. s3b%7eus%7een%7efile=ani_caut.gif%7egen%7eref.gif CAUTION: Remove the special tool while taking preload readings with the Nm (inch/pound) torque wrench. Tighten the nut to set the preload.
    • Rotate the drive pinion occasionally to make sure the differential pinion bearings (4630) (4621) seat correctly. Take frequent differential pinion bearing torque preload readings by rotating the drive pinion with a Nm (inch/pound) torque wrench.
    • If the preload recorded prior to disassembly is lower than the specification for used bearings, then tighten the nut to specification. If the preload recorded prior to disassembly is higher than the specification for used bearings, then tighten the nut to the original reading as recorded.
    • Refer to the torque specification for used differential pinion bearings in the Specifications portion of this section.
  1. s3b%7eus%7een%7efile=ani_caut.gif%7egen%7eref.gif CAUTION: Align the index marks. s3b%7eus%7een%7efile=ani_caut.gif%7egen%7eref.gif CAUTION: Install the driveshaft with new bolts. If new bolts are not available, apply Threadlock and Sealer EOAZ-19554-AA or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSK-M2G351-A5 to the threads of the original bolts. s3b%7eus%7een%7efile=ani_caut.gif%7egen%7eref.gif CAUTION: The driveshaft centering socket yoke fits tightly on the pinion flange pilot. To make sure that the yoke seats squarely on the flange, tighten the bolts evenly in a cross pattern as shown. Connect the driveshaft. .
  1. Install the rear brake calipers.
  1. Install the rear wheel and tire assemblies.
  1. Lower the vehicle.
