At a higher elevation the timing must be reset as the air is thinner and the fuel mixture is not sufficient at your standard timing settings at sea level.

Reverse Gear Malfunction?


It's not a malfunction- this particular auto's idle rpm speed is low and it simply lacks the power to hold on the gradient of the slope- until of course you step on the accelerator pedal.

There is a very brief lag time from the moment your foot comes off the brake pedal to the time it reaches the accelerator pedal; such that by the time the torque converter is able to "perceive and respond' to your brake pedal to accelerator pedal movements, the car will- by the vary nature of gravitational force move in the direction it is being pulled until a force of equal or greater resistance is applied to either hold it in position or move it in the opposite direction.

By its very definition, a torque converter is a type of fluid coupling that is used to transfer rotating power (the engine) to a rotating driven load (the drive train)- that is the transmission, drive shaft, axle gears, and wheels that the tires are mounted on. [The transverse engine set-up is different than an in-line engine design, but the operating principles are basically the same]..

Automatic transmissions work on the same principle of a water wheel. As the current force of the water drops into the vanes of the wheel, it is converting that water force or pressure into useful forms of power as the wheel spins.

If the current flow of the water is so slow that the paddles of the water wheel are unable to detect any force, the wheel does not move- therefore no power-torque output.

Likewise, if the engine is idling too slow for the vanes in the torque converter to detect any push the transmission into power-torque output, then the car is going to freely go into the gravitational direction of the slope.

When driving and have to come to a stop at the bottom of a slope engine loose power car rev but do not move


check the operation of the clutch. > if auto run fault codes and check for torque converter clutch servo or faulty TCM unit . If manual check clutch cable is working properly

I have an 05 reg golf with elec power steering, every thing was ok untill i changed o/s front tyre, as soon as i went to move the car after letting the jack down there was no power steering, any ideas?


Check the wiring harness connector to make sure you didn't knock it off. Also, you can try disconnecting your battery for a few minutes to see if it will reset itself.

To isolate your problem a few questions needed.
  • Do you hear any noise when you hit the switch
  • Does it move a bit
  • Can you operate it from the outside locking mechanism
If you can hear the motor (regulator) but window does not operate, then we established that power is being supplied and fuse/relay are ok. Your problem is a bad window regulator or a guide cable is fraying and caused it to knot up on the guides.

If you hear nothing at all then you first need to figure whether it's a fuse, a relay or the wiring is bad.

How do i align 97 golf head lights


Place the car on level ground approx 3metres away from a blank wall or similar. Measure the distance from the ground to centre of headlight and mark this height on the wall. Turn on dipped beam and you should see a pattern that has a straight vertical line that slopes up at about 45 degrees. Adjust the headlights so the staight portion of line is approx 10mm below the line marked on the wall. That is close enough to be legal. Then get them checked at local garage.
