Question about 2006 Chevrolet Express

1 Answer

Tranny slipping? Recently I heard a "ticking" or "crackling" sound at idle coming from the back of the engine, bellhousing area. When I put the truck in gear, the sound went away (flywheel??). Then as I was driving I started hearing a high pitched winding noise. Soon after the tranny started to slip and kept jumping out of gears. Took awhile to get it into reverse. Fluids all are fine, no leaks. I'm afraid my problems may be internal? All this with 49000 miles on it.

When 1st starting everything sounds perfectly normal. After a minute or less, then the "crackling" or "ticking" sound shows itself at idle. Gets louder as I press the gas pedal in park. Goes away when placed in gear. Driving it felt like the tranny would randomly go into nuetral, and it took a minute or so for reverse gear to engage when shifting from D to R. Something didn't smell right either....

I just pulled the dipstick to check the fluid...cold. It has a really bad burnt smell to it. Really bad smell....I don't think that's good.

    Thanks

Dose it make a normal sound when you start the engine, then more then likely fly wheel ok, anf it's going to be the transmission, if not normal it's the fly wheel.

JUST PURCHASE A 2008 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE 23,000 MILES ON IT. HAD IT FOR 2 MONTHS JUST RECENTLY HEARD A TICKING SOUND FROM THE ENGINE. ONLY HEAR IT WHEN THE CAR IS IDLING. NO ENGINE LIGHT. RUNS...

It sounds like a valve lifter is slightly loose. If it only "ticks" at idle it should not be a problem. If it begins to increase in volume and starts to tick at any other time than idle you need to have it adjusted. It could also be a small amount of sludge deposit blocking the oil. If your oil is dirty change it and the filter.

It sounds like you might have either a broken vacuum line or one that has come off, when a vacuum line comes off or breaks off and its sucking air it will tend to change the idle of the motor and the bigger the vacuum leak the bigger your idle chage usually will be.I would look over all the vacuum lines and see if one hasn't slipped off where it belongs or if there are any broken ones and go from there. If its broke replace vacuum line if it just slipped off put it back on and make sure it fits fairly snug so it don't slip right back off again.

The water is from the thermostat housing, fairly common leak. The ticking maybe from the timing chain cassette. You may have already had the cam timing slip (the cam gears are not keyed, they are held in place by torque alone. The oil gauge sounds like an electrical problem (either sender or sender wiring).

Coolant leak from rear of engine in bellhouseing area

Sounds like you have a freeze plug that has rusted out. And it is located in side the bell housing behind the flywheel. You will need to remove the transmission and the flywheel to gain access to the freeze plugs. There are two of them at the rear of the engine above the center line of the crankshaft. One to the left and one to the right.
