Automatic transmission problem

I have a 1982 Mercedes Benz SD 300 turbodiesel. While I was driving with a small boat on my towbar, in the 4th gear in the automatic transmission, suddenly the gear jumped to the 2nd gear. Then the maximum speed was around 30 km/h.
After 20 minuttes stop everything was fine for 1 kilometer, then suddenly the same problem apeared.

Anyone have an idea what happenende and how I can fix this?

Change fluid, check modulator? Very old MB towing any number of things could have happened to that transmission. Could be a vacuum leak.

1987 benz 300 E is slow or doesnt want to go in drive when first started, it is an automatic transmission. what could be causing this?

Have you checked your fluid level? If it's too low on fluid, it won't shift gears, and if it does, it shifts very roughly. Or perhaps even your gear line could be bad.

89 300E automatic will not go into 4th gear.

Check the vacuum line to the modulator on the right side of the transmission. A lot of time is dry rots and leaks preventing 4th gear. If that isnt it, remove the line and rubber plug on the end of the modulator and adjust the screw inward a full turn to see if any engagement happens. If so, there's your problem

Transmission in 85 mercedes 300d shifts fine till it gets to 4th gear...makes a clank noise as it shifts...fluid level is OK...any ideas or suggestions on hoe to solve??

When the transmission-oil level is good and it's only 1 gear and your clutch isn't worn badly (= working normally, not like you can shift without (hardly) clutching), it's probably a bad tension-plate in the gearbox. Solving it means rebuilding the box or getting a replacement, both quite expensive.
