The chattering noise when at a stop light or stopped with brake on is likely caused by the transmission as the torque converter bearing is wearing.

I would not worry about it as long as the chattering doesn't get unbearable, or the fluid starts to leak out of the transmission, as a result of this wearing.

Is there anything else wrong with the transmission, driveability, etc?

Hope this helps.

The truck has 240K on it and I treat it like a baby. Likely you may have spotted the problem. Can I drain fluid, add an additive to prolong the life?

Well, I generally recommend that people use the recommended fluids for a car in most cases unless they want to alleviate a specific problem, like chattering, for instance.

You may, at your own risk, use a transmission tune up fluid as advertised and sold at many auto parts stores including Walmart.

However, I do not endorse such products, generally, because they can cause more harm than good.

However, in your case your transmission has very high miles, and may be a candidate for a rebuild very soon.

If you want to put a thickener into it, you may, to try to get rid of the problem of rattling. However,

it might have adverse affects on other parts of the transmission.

It's really up to you if you want to risk causing other performance problems with the transmission by using additives.

Good luck, anyway, on fixing this problem.

Cruise control stopped working on a 08 Chevrolet HHR

I just got the perfect answer to this yesterday. It's a $5 fix! Check your brake lights. If any of them are out, it will make the cruise control not function. Turns out all 4 of the 3rd set of brake lights were out. We replaced the 4 of them and the cruise control immediately became functional again. I got this tip from a gentleman in the service department at a local Chevy dealer.

A few months back, if you remember, did you hear a "squeak squeak " that got faster as you picked up speed, then went away as you went over 25 to 30 mph? if so replace your universal joints on drive shaft.
