Trying to locate distributor timing connector to bypass ecm for my 1995 chev 1500 stepside with a 5.7lt engine 4x4, auto transmission?

Look under the dash on the passenger side. It should be near the firewall. Tan wire with a black tracer.

Where is the wire located to stop automatic timing adjustment on a 1994 GMC 1500 5.7L


Hi:) There is a brown wire with a singal black connector in the wiring harness under the brake booster that goes up behind the engine on the drivers side to the distributor area.You disconnect this wire to disengage the computer timing auto adjustment. Set the timing to 0.deg and turn off engine before reconnecting brown wire. Computer will automaticly set the timing.

91 firebird 3.1 v6, if timing is set at 0 degrees instead of 10 degrees btdc would it cause strong exhaust and carbon on plugs


Here is the procedure for setting the timing:
1991-92 Vehicles

See Figure 2
When adjusting the timing, refer to the instructions on the emission control sticker inside the engine compartment. If the instructions on the label disagree with the procedure listed below, follow the instructions on the label.
  1. Locate the timing marks on the crankshaft pulley and the front of the engine.
  2. Clean off the marks and coat them with white paint or chalk, if necessary, so that they may be seen.
  3. Run the engine until it reaches normal operating temperature, then shut off the engine.
  4. With the ignition OFF , connect a tachometer to the distributor, and the pickup lead of an inductive timing light to the No. 1 spark plug wire. Connect the timing light power leads according to the manufacturer's instructions.



WARNING Never pierce a secondary ignition wire in order to connect a timing light. A pierced wire may lead to engine misfiring and driveability problems.

  1. Start the engine. With the engine running at normal operating temperature and all accessories OFF, disconnect the EST bypass connector.

An ECM code will be set when the EST bypass connector is disconnected.
  1. Aim the timing light at the timing mark. The line on the balancer or pulley will line up with the timing mark. If a change in timing is necessary, loosen the hold-down clamp bolt at the base of the distributor. While observing the timing mark, rotate the distributor slightly until the line indicates the correct timing. Use the timing specification on the emission control label in the engine compartment. If this label is missing or damaged, refer to the Tune-Up Specifications chart in this Section.
  2. Tighten the distributor hold-down bolt and recheck the ignition timing to make sure the distributor was not moved when the bolt was tightened.
  3. Turn the engine OFF and remove the timing light and tachometer. Reconnect the number 1 spark plug wire, if disconnected.
  4. Connect the EST bypass connector, then check for and clear the ECM code by disconnecting the negative battery cable for at least 30 seconds.

To prevent ECM damage, the key must be in the OFF position when disconnecting or reconnecting battery cables.

Timing after distributor has been removed? #1 piston is at TDC with timing mark, distributor rotor is at #1 on cap. Blazer starts but does not run like it is in time.


If you have a cam sensor in your distributor (see pic below), you may be off a notch on valve timing. Try unhooking the cam sensor and see if the engine runs better. If yes, put the rotor back on #1 and check to see if you can pull the dist out and find another tooth one way or the other where everything still lines up. There may be 2 or 3 teeth that work for ignition but only one will be right for injector timing, which is what the cam sensor does for you.
If the car doesn't run better with the cam sensor unplugged, try driving it until it's warm. Maybe the computer needs to adjust to the changes. OK?

Where can i get the specs for ignition timing on a 1989 GMC K1500 Pickup


Note: The Timing Connector breaks out of the engine wiring harness conduit adjacent to the distributer. It is a single wire sealed connector that has a tan with black stripe lead.
Note: Timing specifications are listed on the Vehicle Emissions Control Information label under the hood. Always follow the Vehicle Emissions Control Information label procedures first before using the following procedure. PROCEDURE:
Set timing under the following conditions:
  • Normal operating temperature.
  • Air cleaner installed.
  • A/C "OFF".
  • Transmission in neutral.
  • Disconnect SET TIMING connector (tan/black wire) located in the harness close to the distributor. DO NOT disconnect the 4 wire connector at the distributor.
  • Connect timing light and adjust as necessary by loosening hold down bolt and rotating distributor.
Base Timing, with Manual and Automatic Transmissions: 00(TDC)
  • Tighten hold down and recheck the timing.
  • Stop the engine and connect SET TIMING connector.
  • Clear ECM trouble code by disconnecting ECM power source.

Where is the ignition timing bypass connector on a 1994 Chev. Silverado CK2500? After putting in a new distributor, now trying to set the timing. Need to find the bypass connector in order to override...


I think 94 is still OBD1 computer system. Have you ever run codes on it? If so the diagnostics terminal will over ride the computer when running so you can set timing. Just get a .99 cent code key from Autozone or use a paperclip.

not sure off hand but if you can find the wires over the sparkplugs follow there and they will go to the distributor

1995 chevrolet 3500 transmission


I own a shop, and think you should have a 4L-60 in it. These look just like a 700 R-4, but aren't. There isn't much difference in them, but according to my books it should have the 4l60, but some were 4l80. The 4l80 was mostly for the diesel engines though. Glad to help out, Good Luck!!!
