Question about 2004 Oldsmobile Alero

3 Answers

When I turn the car off the whole lighting system stays on it will not turn off. When I pull the key out it dings as if my key is in. Besides radio staying on oil light and battery light stay light on call. It seemed to happen after a rain storm in which I did get a few drops of water which seems to be a result of the windshield cocking compound no longer being there only thing there is the plastic outside cover. Fuse box did seem to have moisture not like it completly leaking but seemed at least like condensations.

I have had a few cases before where the radio seemed to either be on when I went to my car or turned on as soon as I opened the door. If this is possible nothing to do with condensation in the fuse box what could it be and if it is due to water in fuse box how much damage could be done and how much would have to be fixed. The car was running fine I drove it about 16 miles home. I turned off the battery by unplugging it when I plugged it back in about 12 hours later everything still wanted to stay on.

Hi!!

Yes, it sounds like you have moisture on your fuse box. Use compressed air to dry fuse box inside and out and in the back, then, get a can of Ignition System Sealant, they have at AutoZone, and apply a coat to the inside, back and outside of the fuse box, this will make a water repelent coating, preventing the problem from happening again.

Good Luck!!

The ignition switch needs to be checked. Its got short. Its not functioning properly as it should be.When you are turning the key towards off its actually not turning off and there is short so its making the other lights to come on.Also check the dimmer switch under the dash. This can also be affected by the storm. The ignition switch needs to be checked wither and replaced. With meter the voltage will be exact 12 volt. Also check all the connections from battery to starter and battery to alternator . Thanks. Keep updated for any more query. Water invasion in any electronic or electrical area is the worst thing anyone of us could have happen. I recommend using compressed air, from a compressor or a can of dust off and spray the fuse area and other areas that are suspect of getting wet. Allow it dry. This may take a day to resolve. The compressed air will blow any standing water that will be causing an electrical short and hopefully prevent any further damage.

I did have the problem before with just the radio staying on. If this is not a result of water what else could this be. If it did get to my fuse box causing everything to stay on what kind of damage could this cause and how much stuff would have to be replaced.

It is possible, but the fuse box is where all the electrical circuits come together in one place, and is the most likely cause.

You have a lot going on there.possibly the lighting control module but only a guess without further diagnosis. Take it to a reputable garage that deals with electric concerns a lot..but they may tell you to bring to deal

Does the van have an anti-theft system ?
If so you may need to reset it.
If not, a mechanic would check for voltage at the starter, the neutral safety switch, and the key switch.

On my 06 equinox, I've turned off the car but my running lights stay on and the "ding ding" as if the key is in the ignition goes off. I've checked all switches and the car is off, the keys are...

Apparently the computer "thinks" that the key is in the ignition. This can be verified by scanning the body controller data while it is doing this. You will most likely end up having to replace your ignition switch to fix it. Also, if the ignition switch is replaced, the computer will have to be reprogrammed to accept the new ignition switch. Otherwise, you will have problems with your security system and the car will not start.
