Question about 2004 Pontiac Grand Am

1 Answer

My 2004 Grand Am has 50K miles and runs great. I stopped at a grocery store for about 15 minutes last night and it would not start. The battery was strong. I towed it back to my house, about two blocks away. When I got home the car started normally. It happened six months ago as well, same symptoms and outcome. Another item which may be related, there is smoke that occasionally comes out of my steering wheel. It only last for a couple of seconds. It happens on a daily basis but only last for a few seconds and won't happen until I drive again. - HELP!

Hi Friend:

You need to Replace your Inginition Switch, and Probally your Wiring Harness in the steering Wheel colume.

Once you remove your Stering Wheel and Swith You'll Probally see a Indication that your Wiring has been getting HOT and Burning off the Plastic Wire Installation;

Check All the Wiring Under Dash and Under Hood as Well.It won't help to replace it until you get to the Core of The Problem.

Which I'm sure it will be Visable.Un-Wrap any Black Electical Tape that is on the System, It can be Hiding the Wires that have Gotten Hot.

Please let me know how i've helped you,By Voting and a Testamony would be appreciated;

The car will not start It does nothing when you turn the key on except all lights come on

While the lights will work, there is not enough power in the battery to turn the motor over via the starter...first try to jump start your Grand Am with some help...If your car will start, it is NOT the starter. Could be the alternator is not putting out enough charge to re-charge the battery after starting...Your local parts store can check your alternator for free...If the motor runs for awhile and then runs down and dies, this would also confirm the alternator...sometimes you will hear some thuds through your car radio speakers that also confirm the alternator...Your battery could still be the problem...bad cell...a swollen battery case is another indicator of a bad cell in your battery...this can also be tested for free at your parts store if you can get it there...As a last resort if all checks out OK...rarely a short in the starter will drain your battery over night. You may need to let your battery charge for several minutes before jump starting...if it then turns over...go back to the first tests. Hope this helps.

2004 Ford Explorer won't start after battery recharge

A FORD MACHANIC HAS TOLD ME THAT IN FACT THE KEY HAS TO BE RECODED. MY SITUATION IS EXACTLY THE SAME. HE SAID TO RECODE THE KEY I HAD TO TURN THE IGNITION TO THE RUN POSITION, THE SECURITY LIGHT ON THE DASH WILL FLASH RAPIDLY AND CONTINUE TO FLASH FOR 15 MINUTES . WITHIN FIVE MINUTES AFTER THE LIGHT STOPS FLASHING I MUST TURN OFF THE IGNITION FOR ONE SECOND AND TURN IMMEDIATLY BACK TO THE RUN POSITION FOR 15 MORE MINUTES. THE LIGHT WILL GO OFF AGAIN . WITHIN 5 MIN. I MUST TURN OFF THE IGNITION FOR ONE SECOND AND TURN BACK TU RUNNING POSITION. 15 MINUTES LATER REPEAT STEPS AGAIN AND THE KEY WILL BE REPROGRAMMED, AND STSRT THE CAR. GOOD LUCK MY CONTACT IS A FORD MASTER MECHANIC.

Stalling. starts 15 minutes later. runs good for a week.

O.M.G. THE BATTERY SHOULD HAVE BEEN ABOUT 80-95 BUCKS. AND THE TERMINAL IS ABOUT 5 BUCKS TO BUY. TAKE THE CAR TO AN AUTO PARTS STORE THAT CHECKS THE ENGINE CODES FOR FREE.......MAKE SURE THAT THEY CAN CHECK FOR PENDING CODES AS WELL. IT SOUNDS TO ME LIKE A CRANK SENSOR. OH AND BY THE WAY, MOST AUTO PARTS STORES WILL INSTALL A BATTERY THAT YOU PURCHASE AT THEIR STORE FOR FREEEEEEEEEEEEE.!!!!!!!!!!!!..... PLEASE FIND A BETTER MECHANIC. I HOPE THIS HELPS YOU. THANKS FOR USING FIX-YA. BEST OF LUCK. PLEASE KEEP ME POSTED, CAUSE I AM REALLY CURIOUS TO KNOW WHAT YOU FIND.

Intermittently have to use charger to start.

the most common cause of this by far is lights left on by defective switchs, these include the map lights in the visors, the glove box light due to a defective switch, the trunk light and the hood light if equipped, check it at night and look for a faint glow, the other much less common cause is the alternator has a defective diode and allows a small current to pass to ground drawing the battery down..

Car hesitation

had a problem with a grand prix like that once, was the fuel filter, and injectors, all needed replaced, and it only had 89,000 miles.
Would check fuel filter first. Is it possible you got some bad gas??
